Arterial Supply of the Human Anterior Pituitary Gland
Neurosurgery, 1987The vascular anatomy of the anterior lobe (AL) of 182 previously injected human pituitary glands was examined. Three different techniques of injection using India ink and acrylic paints were performed to establish a direct arterial supply to the AL. In 81% of the cases, end-arteries were found in the AL.

Control of Ovulation by the Anterior Pituitary Gland
1972Publisher Summary This chapter discusses control of ovulation by the anterior pituitary gland. Arguments are brought forward in the chapter pointing to the participation of structures situated outside the preoptic area and the hypothalamus in spontaneous ovulation.

Characterization of endothelin receptors in the anterior pituitary gland
American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1993To characterize endothelin (ET) receptors modulating pituitary hormone secretion, potencies of ET-like agonists were compared on prolactin (PRL), thyrotropin (TSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion from primary cultures of female rat pituitary cells. ET-1 was more potent than ET-3 in all cases.

The anterior pituitary gland (adenohypophysis) influences a variety of biologic processes through the secretion and release of polypeptide and glycoprotein hormones (Harris and Donovan, 1966; McCann and Porter, 1969). Body growth is regulated through the synthesis and release of growth hormone (somatotropic hormone, STH), while the structure and ...

Characterization of Neurophysin in the Anterior Pituitary Gland of Sheep
Neuroendocrinology, 1988Portions of sheep anterior pituitary lobe tissue were extracted under acid conditions and assayed for the two neurophysins (oN-III and oN-I/II) by radioimmunoassay. In all tissues examined, oN-III and oN-I/II immunoreactivities were detected. Using a combination of isoelectric focusing and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the neurophysins of the ...

The anterior pituitary gland: Lessons from livestock
Domestic Animal Endocrinology, 2005There has been extensive research of the anterior pituitary gland of livestock and poultry due to the economic (agricultural) importance of physiological processes controlled by it including reproduction, growth, lactation and stress. Moreover, farm animals can be biomedical models or useful in evolutionary/ecological research.

Double tumors of anterior and posterior pituitary gland
Acta Neuropathologica, 1981Double tumors were found in the anterior and posterior lobes of pituitary gland at autopsy in a patient who presented with progressive deterioration of mental status. The chromophobe adenoma of anterior lobe consisted of a mixture of non-immunoreactive hormone containing cells and a few prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) cells in the mid portion ...

Oxytocin and the anterior pituitary gland.
Advances in experimental medicine and biology, 1996Release of oxytocin into the vicinity of the long portal vessels connecting the hypothalamus with the anterior pituitary gland and the presence of short portal vessels connecting the posterior lobe to the anterior pituitary established the potential for the peptide to act in a neuroendocrine fashion controlling the release of one or several ...

Disorders of the anterior pituitary gland
2010Abstract The pituitary gland or hypophysis cerebri was first described by Galen of Pergamon in the 2nd century ad, and is considered to be the ‘master gland’ integrating hormonal signals that control numerous endocrine and metabolic functions.

Acetylcholine Receptors in the Rat Anterior Pituitary Gland*
Endocrinology, 1980The muscarinic antagonist [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) was used to study muscarinic cholinergic binding sites in a crude membrane fraction prepared from the rat anterior pituitary gland. Specific [3H]QNB binding is saturable with a Kd of 16 pM and a receptor concentration of 46 fmol/mg protein.
