Integrated demographic strategies are more strongly associated with variation in conspecific density dependence than single traits in tropical tree seedlings

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
Species‐specific conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) varied widely among tropical tree species. CNDD was strongest in fast‐growing species and tall, long‐lived pioneers, weakly related to most functional traits except wood density and strongest in rare species. These results show that integrated life‐history strategies explain CNDD variation

Factors limiting seed germination of terrestrial bromeliads in the sandy coastal plains (restinga) of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

open access: yesRodriguésia
Vegetation islands surrounded by bare sand are one of the most characteristic features of the sandy plains (restinga) of the Brazilian coastline. Abiotic conditions outside the islands are too harsh for the establishment of plants.

Trait‐based species selection for restoration: A case study from tropical landscapes dominated by bracken

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results can be used by stakeholders to select the species best suited for active restoration projects in bracken‐dominated areas throughout the tropical region. Furthermore, our trait‐based approach, which considers seedling performance in disturbed areas, can serve as a guide for species selection in restoration programmes in other disturbed ...

Species functional traits affect regional and local dominance across western Amazonian forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 1, January 2026.
Dominant tree species in western Amazonian forests show distinct functional trait combinations linked to habitat type: conservative traits in stressful habitats and greater plant size in less stressful environments. Local dominants are defined by resource conservation strategies and widespread dominants are defined by resource acquisition strategies. A

Disentangling seed availability and establishment filters at alpine treelines through a decade‐long field manipulation

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 12, Page 3830-3844, December 2025.
Treeline advance under warming occurs only when multiple filters align—adequate seed supply, favourable microclimatic windows, moderated herbivory and shrub effects that remain facilitative rather than competitive. Abstract Climate warming is expected to increase upslope shifts of alpine treelines globally.
