Advances in methods for detection of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), the biochemical process oxidizing ammonium into dinitrogen gas using nitrite as an electron acceptor, has only been recognized for its significant role in the global nitrogen cycle not long ago, and its ubiquitous ...

The Impact of Oil Palm Plantations and Pastures on Benthic Prokaryotic and Fungal Communities in Tropical Streams

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 70, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT The expansion of oil palm plantations and cattle grazing lands has a detrimental impact on freshwater ecosystems, causing ecological degradation and biodiversity loss in the tropics, although little is known about the effects on the aquatic microbial community.

Microbial Communities and Chemosynthesis in Yellowstone Lake Sublacustrine Hydrothermal Vent Waters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
. Five sublacustrine hydrothermal vent locations from 1-109 m water depth in Yellowstone Lake were surveyed by ribosomal RNA sequencing in relation to their chemical composition and dark CO2 fixation rates.

Unique episymbiotic relationship between Candidatus Patescibacteria and Zoogloea in activated sludge flocs at a municipal wastewater treatment plant

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2024.
In this study, we reconstructed the high‐quality metagenome‐assembled genome of JAEDAM01, designed new probes to visualize members of JAEDAM01 and identified its host, Zoogloea, using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Our findings indicate a novel symbiotic relationship between Ca. Patescibacteria and Procaryote.

Disentangling the factors defining Bacillus subtilis group species abundance in natural soils

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 9, September 2024.
Bacillus subtilis is unevenly distributed between soil samples from grasslands and forests, reflected by distinct microbiome association patterns. Combining amplicon sequencing with physio‐chemical analysis revealed that multiple chemical variables, primarily pH, affect microbial composition.

Three-dimensional stratification of bacterial biofilm populations in a moving bed biofilm reactor for nitritation-anammox. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) are increasingly used for nitrogen removal with nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) processes in wastewater treatment.

Effects of Lake Erie dredged material on microbiomes in a farm soil of northwestern Ohio

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, Volume 53, Issue 4, Page 430-440, July/August 2024.
Abstract Dredged materials are often considered as candidates for replenishing lost topsoils in the watersheds of rivers and lakes. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of Lake Erie dredged material on the microbial community in a farm soil of northwestern Ohio.
