Inhomogeneous Plane Waves

Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 1984
After an extended survey of the Gibbs-Synge theory of bivectors (complex vectors) the paper uses that theory to find results on the polarization of inhomogeneous plane waves. The link between bivectors and plane waves is that the field (e.g. displacement u or electric field E) corresponding to a train of such waves is described in terms of two ...

Symmetrized plane waves: 2. symmetrized Pm3̄m-plane waves

Computer Physics Communications, 1996
A procedure for systematically constructing symmetrized plane waves is applied to construct in full detail a complete set of symmetrized plane waves with respect to the symmorphic space group Pm3m.

Plane Wave and Coulomb Asymptotics

Physica Scripta, 2004
Summary: A simple plane wave solution of the Schrödinger-Helmholtz equation is a quantum eigenfunction obeying both energy and linear momentum correspondence principles. Inclusion of the outgoing wave with scattering amplitude \(f\) obeys unitarity and the optical theorem. By closely considering the standard asymptotic development of the plane wave, we

Augmented-plane-wave forces

Physical Review B, 1990
On demontre l'exactitude d'une methode de calcul d'une theorie de structure electronique. La methode combine le pouvoir et la flexibilite de l'onde plane amelioree avec la methode de Car-Parrinello de dynamique moleculaire et de minimisation de l'energie totale.

Colliding almost-plane gravitational waves: Colliding plane waves and general properties of almost-plane-wave spacetimes

Physical Review D, 1988
It is well known that when two precisely plane-symmetric gravitational waves propagating in an otherwise flat background collide, they focus each other so strongly as to produce a curvature singularity. This paper is the first of several devoted to almost-plane gravitational waves and their collisions.

Stability of Periodic Plane Waves

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1987
Given a nonlinear partial differential equation for which an explicit solution is known, standard linear stability theory can be used to study the stability of such a solution by determining the variational equation obtained by linearizing the given equation about the solution. This method is applied to explicit plane wave solutions of the Schrödinger,

Multipole expansion of a plane wave

Journal of Mathematical Physics, 2002
The spherical components of the multipole expansion of a plane wave with arbitrary spin are obtained in terms of spin-weighted spherical harmonics. It is shown that the expansion coefficients are essentially spin-weighted spherical harmonics evaluated at the direction of propagation of the wave.

Strings on plane waves: an introduction

Fortschritte der Physik, 2003
AbstractThis article is a brief introduction to different aspects of string theory on maximally supersymmetric plane waves in ten dimensions. The article touches on the following aspects: quantization of free strings on the plane wave background, the plane wave as a Penrose limit and it's relation to AdS / CFT; and finally the causal structure of the ...

PLANE WAVES WITH TRANSVERSE STRUCTURE

Reviews in Mathematical Physics, 1991
We prove that some inhomogeneous scalar waves among which the focus wave modes are nondispersive plane waves with a nonuniform transverse structure.
