Effects of Dynamical Evolution of Giant Planets on Survival of Terrestrial Planets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The orbital distributions of currently observed extrasolar giant planets allow marginally stable orbits for hypothetical, terrestrial planets. In this paper, we propose that many of these systems may not have additional planets on these "stable" orbits, since past dynamical instability among giant planets could have removed them.

In Situ Formation of a Melt‐Solid Interface Toward Stable Oxygen Reduction in Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
Protonic ceramic fuel cells offer a promising route to generate power efficiently but face critical challenges in achieving industrially viable activity and stability at their cathodes in CO2‐containing air. This report proposes a new cathode material design strategy to enable the cathode to be both catalytically active and CO2 tolerant through the ...

Protoplanetary disks including radiative feedback from accreting planets

open access: yes, 2015
While recent observational progress is converging on the detection of compact regions of thermal emission due to embedded protoplanets, further theoretical predictions are needed to understand the response of a protoplanetary disk to the planet formation

Survival of habitable planets in unstable planetary systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Many observed giant planets lie on eccentric orbits. Such orbits could be the result of strong scatterings with other giant planets. The same dynamical instability that produces these scatterings may also cause habitable planets in interior orbits to become ejected, destroyed, or be transported out of the habitable zone.

Wetting of Surface Grafted Hydrophilic‐b‐Hydrophobic Block Copolymer Brushes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The wetting properties of surface grafted diblock copolymer brushes are influenced by the thickness of the hydrophilic bottom block and the hydrophobic top block. The surface adapts in presence of water and the contact angles of the bottom block shine through. Abstract The wetting of diblock copolymer brushes by water is studied.

Planetary Temperatures in the Presence of an Inert, Nonradiative Atmosphere

open access: yesQuaestiones Geographicae, 2020
This study considers solid planets at about 300 K and an inert atmosphere having no interaction with associated radiation. Processes considered include transfer of energy from the surface skin to underlying layers depending on thermal properties ...

Enhanced Performance and Durability of Zinc–Air Batteries Utilizing W‐Doped Cobalt Pentlandite Catalysts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A W‐doped cobalt pentlandite electrocatalyst with sulfur vacancies is synthesized, guided by DFT calculations, which modifies the d‐band center, promoting oxygen intermediate desorption and lowering the *O generation energy barrier, thus enhancing catalytic activity.

The Intra-Mercurial Planet Or Planets [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1876
THE question of the existence of one or more planetary bodies revolving within the orbit of Mercury is again revived by Weber's observation of a round black spot just within the sun's eastern limb, on the afternoon of April 4 in the present year which had not been visible on the same morning, and early on the following day had disappeared. The position

Stellar Flybys Interrupting Planet–Planet Scattering Generates Oort Planets [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2019
Abstract Wide-orbit exoplanets are starting to be detected, and planetary formation models are under development to understand their properties. We propose a population of “Oort” planets around other stars, forming by means of a mechanism analogous to how the solar system’s Oort cloud of comets was populated.
