Surface and Planetary Boundary-Layer Modelling of Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layers

1999
Abstract For surface layer (0-lOOm height) studies of stable stratified flow over topography, the conventional constant flux layer flows with log-linear profiles for velocity and potential temperature or density are unsuitable as they stand, since velocity linearly increases with height.

Planetary boundary layer and turbulence parameterizations

2007
Introduction We have seen how the various properties of the land surface can influence the fluxes of energy that occur in the atmospheric surface layer. Now that these boundary conditions have been described, the next step is to determine how these energy fluxes influence the evolution of the atmosphere.

The surface roughness and planetary boundary layer

pure and applied geophysics, 1980
Applications of the entrainment process to layers at the boundary, which meet the self similarity requirements of the logarithmic profile, have been studied. By accepting that turbulence has dominating scales related in scale length to the height above the surface, a layer structure is postulated wherein exchange is rapid enough to keep the layers ...

Airplane Measurements of Planetary Boundary Layer Structure

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1970
Abstract Measurements of air velocity and temperature from an airplane in the planetary boundary layer with strong surface heating are used to calculate vertical heat, momentum and energy fluxes, as well as spectral densities and probability distributions of velocity and temperature.

Lectures on the Planetary Boundary Layer

1983
There have been a few such workshops and short courses on aspects of boundary-layer meteorology over the past decade, so that a lecturer today must consider carefully where to start. I have decided to try to bring a contemporary view to my lectures, which means I will not be able to cover some older and now well-understood topics.

The thickness of the planetary boundary layer

Atmospheric Environment (1967), 1969
Many different methods for estimating the thickness H of the planetary boundary layer are summarized and applied to the 1953 O'Neill boundary layer observations. The observed variation of the thickness H is best explained by Latkhtman's (1961) formula, which states that H is directly proportional to the free-stream or geostrophic wind speed and ...
