Deep Source Regions for Back‐Arc Volcanism in the Patagonian Slab Window Imaged by Finite Frequency P and SH Body Wave Tomography

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 17, 16 September 2025.
Abstract The subduction of the Chile Ridge beneath South America beginning 12–16 Myr ago opened a gap in the subducting slab beneath southern Patagonia, which migrated northward and is located today at 46°S. Geodynamic processes associated with the slab window are poorly understood.

Phanerozoic Onset of Massive Continental Weathering

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 17, 16 September 2025.
Abstract Continental weathering acts as a nexus of global biogeochemical cycles yet its long‐term evolution remains unclear. Here we show that continental weathering may not have operated on a massive scale until the early Paleozoic based on a large‐number data compilation of mudstone geochemistry.

Late Cenozoic intraplate volcanism as a trigger for hydrothermal venting in the Arctic southwestern Eurasia Basin

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Intraplate volcanism has occurred for the last 35 million years within Northeast Atlantic and Arctic margins, including the western Barents Sea, Svalbard, and northern Greenland. Earlier studies have suggested that some of this volcanism might be sourced

Deep Learning‐Based Automated Segmentation of Layered Crater Ejecta on Mars

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 2, Issue 3, September 2025.
Abstract Layered crater ejecta (LCE) with fluidization on Mars is generally believed to be related to the near‐surface ice‐bearing deposits. The improvement in the resolution of planetary image data has led to the discovery of more and more LCE, providing support for further research on the formation and geological significance of layered ejecta ...

Prolonged Intervals of Relativistic Electron Storm‐Time Flux Enhancements in the Magnetotail at Lunar Distance

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract We report on prolonged enhancements of electron fluxes at energies at or above 500 keV, observed in the magnetotail by the lunar‐orbiting Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of Moon's Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) during the recovery phase of a magnetic storm with minimum Dst ${D}_{st}$ ≈ ${\approx} $ −200 nT ...

Atmospheric Escape From Earth and Mars: Response to Solar and Solar Wind Drivers of Oxygen Escape

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Habitability at the surface of a planet depends on having an atmosphere long enough for life to develop. The loss of atmosphere to space is an important component in assessing planetary surface habitability.

Unique Na5−xSbSe Phase Enables High‐Rate Performance of Sb2Se3 Anodes in Na‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 15, Issue 31, August 19, 2025.
The (de)sodiation mechanism of Sb2Se3 is revealed through advanced operando techniques and ab initio simulations and underscores the value of complementary methods in exploring battery mechanisms. A new Na5−xSbSe phase is identified as the final sodiation product of Sb2Se3 anodes in Na‐ion batteries (NIBs), which enables the remarkably high‐rate ...

The single beacon: progresses in understanding Earth as an exoplanet using DSCOVR/EPIC observations

open access: yesFrontiers in Remote Sensing
Almost 6000 exoplanets have thus far been confirmed, revolutionizing our understanding of planetary habitability. Yet, despite the identification of Earth-like exoplanets, definitive evidence of extraterrestrial life remains elusive.
