The Role of Tides in Planetary Habitability

2011
Terrestrial planets in the classic "habitable zone" (Kasting et al. 1993) of stars may be influenced by tides. Tidal evolution is poorly constrained and multiple acceptable models exist which, although qualitatively similar, predict different rates of evolution.

Chapter 7: Assessing Habitability Beyond Earth

Astrobiology
All known life on Earth inhabits environments that maintain conditions between certain extremes of temperature, chemical composition, energy availability, and so on (Chapter 6).

The habitability of eccentric planetary orbits

2016
The huge number of exo-planets discovered so far show an unexpected diversity of planetary systems where most planets indicate eccentricity motion. Since Earth is still the only habitable planet we know and the planetary motion in our Solar system is nearly circular we study possible constraints of habitability in case of eccentric planetary motion ...

Netherlands Planetary Science Network on Observables of Planetary Habitability

Planetary habitability is driven by interior, surface, and external processes shaping the planet in concerto. To understand planetary habitability in our solar system, it is crucial to compare these planetary processes between its planets and moons and Earth, the only planet we know is habitable.

Planetary Habitable Zones: The Spatial Distribution of Life on Planetary Bodies

2001
In this work, the biophysical requirements of microbial life and the mean global physical environment of Earth and Mars are compared to suggest potential habitable zones on both planets. On average, life on Earth is restricted to the troposphere up to 8 km above mean sea level.

Planetary Environmental Signatures for Habitability and Life

2008
In the vast blackness of space, our home planet is a single sparkling oasis of life. Whether the Universe harbors other worlds that can support even simple life is a question that has been pondered, yet remained unanswered, for over two thousand years.
