Planetary mass, vegetation height and climate

International Journal of Astrobiology, 2019
AbstractThe maximum height trees can grow on Earth is around 122–130 m. The height is constrained by two factors: the availability of water, and where water is not limiting, the pressure available to drive the column of water along the xylem vessels against the pull of gravity (cohesion tension).

Discovery of a Young Planetary-Mass Binary

Science, 2006
We have identified a companion to the young planetary-mass brown dwarf Oph 162225-240515. This pair forms a resolved binary consisting of two objects with masses comparable to those of extrasolar giant planets. Several lines of evidence confirm the coevality and youth of the two objects, suggesting that they form a physical binary.

Mass anisotropy and planetary motion

Il Nuovo Cimento, 1961
The consequences of mass anisotropy for planetary motion are investigated. A precession of the perihelion in the plane of the orbit is predicted. Application of the theory to Mercury establishes an upper limit for the mass anisotropy ratio of 1.57.10-10 for planetary systems.

Mass spectrometry in planetary research

International Journal of Mass Spectrometry and Ion Processes, 1985
Abstract The availability of rockets and space probes has made possible in situ investigations of the earth's upper atmosphere and the atmospheres of other planets and comets. Mass spectrometers are able to make both gas and isotopic analyses. They have played a major role in the study of the earth's upper atmosphere and in the investigation of the ...

The Masses of the Progenitors of Planetary Nebulae

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2001
Bipolar, elliptical, and circular planetary nebulae appear to be possessed of differing Galactic scale heights, a feature which is usually assumed to arise from the differing distributions and masses of their progenitor stars. It would appear that more massive progenitors are responsible for bipolar sources, whilst the least massive progenitors give ...

Producing Planetary-Mass Objects

Science, 2001
ASTROPHYSICS Models suggest that stars form by the gravitational collapse of a molecular cloud, whereas planets form in circumstellar disks around young stars by accretion. Recent observations have uncovered isolated planetary-mass objects, and neither model is adequate to explain these ...

Mass spectrometry for planetary science

2002
Attaining a satisfactory understanding of the origin and evolution of the solar system and life within it are among the primary scientific goals of current and future planetary missions. One important clue to understanding these questions is the chemical and isotopic composition of atmospheric and surface volatile materials.
