There is a rich phenomenology within the planetary rings surrounding the giant planets, most of it discovered by the Voyagers during their historic tours of t he outer solar system in the 1980s. In the last decade, there have been two detailed IUGG reviews of planetary rings.

Theoretical models of planetary-ring dynamics are examined in a brief analytical review. The mathematical description of streamlines and streamline interactions is outlined; the redistribution of angular momentum due to collisions between particles is explained; and problems in the modeling of broad, narrow, and arc rings are discussed.

Occurrence of Planetary Rings with Shepherds
Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, 2001We consider the system of planetary rings with shepherds as a restricted three or four-body problem, neglecting interactions between ring particles. We show that the generic occurrence of rings for the case of rotating short-range potentials can be extended to the case of gravitational potentials.
