Qualitative relational mapping and navigation for planetary rovers [PDF]

open access: yesRobotics and Autonomous Systems, 2016
This paper presents a novel method for qualitative mapping of large scale spaces. The proposed framework makes use of a graphical representation of the world in order to build a map consisting of qualitative constraints on the geometric relationships between landmark triplets.

Study on SMA driven hopper design for planetary exploration

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2018
This paper studies the feasibility of a hopper for planetary exploration rovers. The proposed hopper is designed based on shape memory alloy(SMA) actuators, because SMA actuators are light in mass compared with traditional electric motors.

Multi-scale path planning for a planetary exploration vehicle with multiple locomotion modes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Planetary exploration vehicles (rovers) can encounter with a great variety of situations. Most of them are related to the terrain, which can cause the end of the mission if these vehicles are not able to traverse it.
