Planetary nebulae in planetary and binary systems

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1981
The problem of the survival of a low-mass secondary orbiting a primary that becomes a planetary nebula is studied. The values of the mass of the primary are 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0M ⊙; the values of the mass of the secondary 0.001M ⊙, 0.01M ⊙ and 0.1M ⊡.

On the Spacing of Planetary Systems

Physical Review Letters, 2000
We present a simplified model of planetary accretion based on conservation of mass, conservation of momentum, and angular-momentum-deficit stability. Within the limitations of this model, we show how the organization of generic planetary systems may be derived from the knowledge of their initial mass distribution.

The formation of the planetary system

Celestial Mechanics, 1984
One of the most challenging problems of natural science is the question of how our solar system was formed some 4,6 billion years ago. The main difficulties encountered in trying to find any definite answer to this problem are twofold. In the first place we cannot design direct experiments which could give us clues to the relative importance of the ...

A Planetary Park system for Mars

Space Policy, 2004
The increasing robotic exploration of Mars and eventual human exploration and settlement of that planet threatens to have a significant environmental impact on scientifically important sites and sites of natural beauty in the form of contamination with micro-organisms and spacecraft parts.

Planetary Systems and Extraterrestrial Life

Origins of Life, 1974
The paper reviews the present status of the problem of the existence of other planetary systems in the Galaxy. Observational data and theoretical results are presented to show that the occurrence of planetary systems is, most probably, not a universal phenomenon. Study of the stability of planetary orbits in the vicinity of double stars indicates that,

Polarimetry of Stars and Planetary Systems

2015
Summarising the striking advances of the last two decades, this reliable introduction to modern astronomical polarimetry provides a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art techniques, models and research methods. Focusing on optical and near-infrared wavelengths, each detailed, up-to-date chapter addresses a different facet of recent innovations ...

Polarization of Planetary Systems

2014
The meeting “Polarization of Planetary Systems”, sponsored by the EU-COST Ac- tion, brought together experts in the study of polarization from the celestial bodies of our solar system and extra-solar planets. Among the main themes under discussion, particular emphasis was given to the diagnostic power offered by the study of the atmospheric properties ...

A Planetary System Is Born?

Science, 2004
ASTROPHYSICS Herbig Ae/Be stars are intermediate-mass, pre-main sequence stars, and some have circumstellar disks in which extrasolar planets and planetesimal precursors may lurk. The very young Herbig Be star LkHα234 is embedded in a nebula within the NGC 7129 star formation region. Five spectra taken by Chakraborty et al.
