Several millennia ago, the Greeks coined the word “planet,” or wanderer, to describe the five roving objects they saw chaotically traversing the sky. Today, our knowledge of these other worlds has accelerated beyond the solar system: The first extrasolar planet was reported in 1995, 20 more ...

Planetary Systems and Extraterrestrial Life
Origins of Life, 1974The paper reviews the present status of the problem of the existence of other planetary systems in the Galaxy. Observational data and theoretical results are presented to show that the occurrence of planetary systems is, most probably, not a universal phenomenon. Study of the stability of planetary orbits in the vicinity of double stars indicates that,

Planetary ring studies have evolved from observations of a single example, (Saturn), to related studies of a class of objects, in the last several years; in fact, this is the first IUGG review article on the subject. Therefore, it seems appropriate to cite at least review articles going back beyond 1979, if only as a guide to earlier literature ...

In this chapter we give an overview of the properties of our planetary system — both those related to its dynamical structure, namely the orbital and rotational motions of the constituent bodies, and those connected with their physical nature (e.g., size, composition, the presence of an atmosphere and/or of a solid surface).
