Plasma waves in planetary magnetospheres
Reviews of Geophysics, 1983The studies of magnetospheric plasma waves in the 1979–1982 quadrennium have included not only intensive studies of plasma waves in the Earth's magnetosphere but also, for the first time, in situ observations and detailed analyses of plasma waves in the magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn.

Resonant interactions between planetary waves
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1967In contrast to surface gravity waves, planetary waves can interact resonantly at the second order. Hence triplets of planetary waves may occur which are in resonance with each other. For simplicity the situation is studied first on a β plane.

Asymptotic method for planetary waves
The Physics of Fluids, 1975An asymptotic method based upon the ray theory is extended to the study of planetary waves in a fluid of variable depth over the rotating earth. An asymptotic solution involving a phase function and an amplitude function is constructed. Application of the method to the study of wave resonance of a compressible fluid in a rotating spherical shell is ...

Tropopause Dynamics and Planetary Waves
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1994Abstract A simple model of the large-scale atmospheric circulation is studied. The model is based on the observation that the potential vorticity changes rapidly at the tropopause. This observation underlies the assumption that the potential vorticity on an isentropic surface, cutting through the tropopause, is piecewise uniform with a discontinuity at

Solitary and cnoidal planetary waves
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, 1971Abstract A class of long planetary waves in a zonal channel analogous to the solitary and cnoidal waves of surface and internal gravity wave theory is discussed. On a mid-latitude β-plane, such waves exist as the result of divergence, non-uniform zonal velocity fields or bottom topography.

Acoustic Waves in Planetary Atmospheres
The Physics Teacher, 2002We present a study of the speed, Mach number, and intensity of sound waves in the atmospheres of the planets. These represent real examples of applied simple concepts of acoustics.

Planetary Waves in the Ionosphere
1998Abstract : The objectives of this grant are to delineate and to better understand oscillations in ionospheric structure which occur at planetary-wave periods (i.e., 2-10 days). Effort has concentrated on analyses of about 30 years' of archived ionosonde data from a global array of stations, and some satellite-based measurements of total electron ...
