Drivers of Mouse Plagues: Exceptional Rainfall Following Prolonged Drought Triggers Mouse Plagues in Southeastern Australia

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study identified a specific sequence of an extended drought followed by exceptional rainfall as a necessary precursor for mouse plagues in southeastern Australia. Long‐term rainfall anomalies interact with ecological processes to reset population dynamics, creating conditions that support rapid mouse population growth following periods of ...

Glass eels and viruses – a lesson learnt from stocking the eastern German Baltic Sea coast

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Accepted Article., 2022
Abstract Concerns about Anguillid herpesvirus 1 (AngHV‐1) in European eels, especially due to stocking measures, is increasingly coming into focus and raises questions regarding disease monitoring and prevention. In the past, stocking of AngHV‐1‐positive eels into waters assumed AngHV‐1‐free has led to a rapid increase of infected eels in the wild. For

Navigating Sovereignty and Marine Biosecurity: The Challenge of Regulating Visiting Naval Vessels in Global Ports

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Environmental security has traditionally focused on climate change, resource scarcity and environmental degradation as drivers of instability and conflict. Comparatively little attention has been given to environmental biosecurity despite biological invasions representing one of the most significant and irreversible forms of environmental ...

Rising Connectivity, Shifting Hubs: The Evolving Network and Governance Challenges of Global Wild‐Sourced Trade

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Wild‐sourced wildlife trade is not only increasing in volume but also changing in network structure. Using three decades of CITES trade records, we found that the wild‐sourced wildlife trade has become increasingly connected and taxonomically uneven, with Anthozoa contributing a growing share.

From glacial echoes to timber pathways: Climatic–historical drivers and timber‐trade influence on the phylogeography of Ips sexdentatus in the Basque Country

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Ips sexdentatus is expanding across southern Europe, attacking multiple Pinus species and showing the ability to colonize trees at early stages of decline. Genetic analysis of 668 individuals revealed 106 haplotypes, with Iberian populations as diversity hotspots, reflecting long‐term refugial persistence alongside more recent demographic expansion ...

Global climatic suitability and future distribution of Hypsipyla grandella: Implications for Meliaceae under climate change

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Global climatic suitability of Hypsipyla grandella was predicted using MaxEnt modelling. Current and future climate scenarios indicate shifts in suitable areas worldwide. The results support phytosanitary surveillance and pest management planning under climate change. Abstract Hypsipyla grandella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is one of the main pests

Simulation‐Based Education for Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Emergency Procedures in the South Pacific: A Pilot Study

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
A one‐day regional simulation course significantly improved confidence in five emergency OHNS procedures among South Pacific surgeons and trainees, with improvements sustained at 6 months. Two‐thirds reported applying course skills clinically, supporting simulation‐based education as a feasible approach to regional surgical capacity building.
