Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Investigation of XvSap promoters from the resurrection plant, Xerophyta viscosa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Includes bibliographical references. The XvPSap1 promoter derived from Xerophyta viscosa has been demonstrated to be stress-inducible during dehydration in transgenic Nicotiana tabacum, black Mexican sweetcorn cells and Zea mays. To improve this promoter,

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

Aptamers as emerging tools for plant disease management: From biosensing to active modulation

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Conventional methods for plant disease detection and management often face limitations in sensitivity, specificity, and field applicability. Aptamers, with high affinity and specificity, present a promising alternative.

Impact of Biotechnology on Plant Breeding [PDF]

open access: yes
The application of modern biotechnology to plant breeding is considered to be more efficient and quicker than conventional breeding techniques in the development of new and more resilient crop varieties. To test the impact that biotechnology is having on

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Evaluation of the knowledge of a population about the risk of plantain and banana transformed with Black Sigatoka resistant genes

open access: yesBiotecnología Vegetal, 2007
An increasing impact of plant biotechnology on society is present in all over the world. Scientific understanding should be developed on people so they can be able to make right personal decisions and participate in public debate about this technology ...
