Radiometric Constraints on the Timing, Tempo, and Effects of Large Igneous Province Emplacement

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 27-82., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Persistence without prosperity at the upper range margin: Elevation, microhabitat buffering and biotic pressure in a range‐expanding spider

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Anthropogenic linear features facilitate high‐elevation colonization. Parasitoid pressure declines markedly with elevation. Cocoon damage increases despite reduced parasitism at high elevation. Abstract The upper elevational range limits of thermophilic arthropods reflect constraints on population persistence rather than simple presence.

Does the munch affect the bunch? Using community science to explore insect herbivory and fruit production in an understory plant

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
We used iNaturalist records, a longitudinal field survey, and a simulated herbivory experiment to explore how insect herbivory factors are associated with Cornus canadensis fruit production. Naturally observed internal and external insect herbivory was mostly low intensity and did not have a strong relationship with fruit production.

Parasitic wasp‐associated polydnavirus and venom affect arthropod community assembly on wild cabbage via the caterpillar host

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Cotesia glomerata polydnavirus and venom, either alone or in combination, affect colonisation by members of the arthropod community in a natural field setting. Plants damaged by P. brassicae injected with both polydnavirus and venom were colonised more often by Mamestra brassicae caterpillars, Myzus persicae aphids and aphid parasitoids compared to ...

Canopy position and tree size structure the distribution of honeydew‐producing scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) in a temperate hardwood forest

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Scale insect abundance peaked in the upper canopy of sugar maples. Parthenolecanium peaked on older internodes; Lepidosaphes on the current leader. Internodes longer than the previous carried more scales; wider ones fewer. Abstract Forest canopies are vertically stratified habitats in which microclimate and host tissue quality vary with height.

Atlantic trade and the West African market economy: New evidence from cowry imports, 1650–1905

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract Between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, billions of cowries arrived in West Africa, leaving one of the few quantitative traces available for historians to measure the Atlantic trade's impact on the precolonial market economy. Yet, current estimates substantially underestimate the volume of cowry imports.

A Preliminary Study of the Insect Galls of Iowa [PDF]

open access: yes, 1942
The abnormal growths frequently found on plants and known as insect galls have led to much study of their origin and manner of development. These abnormal plant structures may vary from a simple fold-like gall on a leaf to a highly complex structure ...

Teaching Undergraduate Special Care Dentistry in the UK and Ireland: What? How? When? How Much? Who?

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Dental Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction New dental graduates are expected to have acquired the skills and behaviours to provide dental care for the population they serve. An ageing population and advances in medicine mean that there are increasing numbers of patients who may require Special Care Dentistry. Special Care Dentistry is the branch of dentistry concerned with
