open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 31, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The visit to Bogotá of a fééeneminaa (Muinane) friend, Célimo Nejedeka Jifichíu, and in particular, his work in researching and transmitting traditional health knowledge, offer the pretext to navigate the relationship between elements that at first glance seem distant from each other: indigenous imaginaries about otherness, their visions of ...

Assessing contributions of deterministic versus stochastic processes to local species assembly: A field experiment with annual plant‐dominated communities in gypsum systems

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 3, March 2026.
In this study, we experimentally show that stochasticity can play prominent roles in driving local species assembly in annual plant‐dominated communities of semiarid gypsum ecosystems. Drylands are traditionally viewed as restrictive environments that impose strong deterministic filtering effects, but neutral events can also contribute decisively to ...

How do drought and elevated temperatures influence CO2 fertilization effects on tree seedling performance? A global meta‐analysis

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 10, Page 2875-2888, October 2025.
These results suggest that the fertilization effect of CO2 at the seedling stage may be limited when additional environmental stressors, such as drought, are present. The combined effect of drought, temperature and CO2 mainly resulted in additive effects, where each stressor independently influences plant performance rather than interacting to amplify ...

Salty suitors: High larval sodium intake reduces adult lifespan and influences reproductive behaviour in a lepidopteran herbivore

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 5, Page 886-898, October 2025.
Low‐sodium females took significantly longer to start mating than high‐sodium females, but no pairings differed in the duration of copulation. Reproductive outputs, measured by number of clutches, hatching young, adult offspring and pupation time, did not differ across parental sodium pairings.

High soil moisture triggers negative plant–soil feedbacks in a tropical forest

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1469-1482, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant‐microbial interactions help stabilize coexistence and shape ecological communities. These interactions are sensitive to abiotic conditions, but how they may be affected by environmental change is unknown.

Metabolic traits and thresholds to inform marine ecological conservation and restoration

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 6, Page 1350-1363, June 2025.
Integrating organismal responses to environmental stressors into monitoring protocols can provide early warning indicators of ecosystem health. This approach strengthens conservation and restoration initiatives, supporting policy decisions in the face of increasing coastal development and climate change.
