This paper reviews the recent literature on synergism, adulteration and risks of using medicinal plants. The use of copaiba and sacaca plants as well as their adulteration and side effects, are also described. Talauma ovata St. Hil. (Magnoliaceae) is a big tree, which the trunk bark has been used in folk medicine against fever. Chemical analysis of nine populations showed the occurrence of two chemotypes in well-defined geographic localization. The first chemotype is characterized by neolignans and is found in latitude bellow 20°S.
