Foraging behavioural traits of tropical insectivorous birds lead to dissimilar communities in contrasting forest habitats

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2019, Issue 1, Page 1-6, December 2019., 2019
Many deforested areas worldwide have been planted with Alnus spp. to protect watersheds and soils. However, the effects of these plantations on biodiversity are little known yet. Contrasting forest types may impose strong environmental filters to some behavioural traits, leading to dissimilar communities.

Difference in the net value of ecological services between natural and artificial forests in China

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 33, Issue 5, Page 1076-1083, October 2019., 2019
Abstract Land degradation is a global problem that seriously threatens human society. However, in China and elsewhere, ecological restoration still largely relies on a traditional approach that focuses only on ecological factors and ignores socioeconomic factors.

‘Sowing and harvesting water’: Revisiting forest restoration in the Peruvian Andes through a multi‐stakeholder analysis

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 3, Page 631-652, March 2025.
Abstract Efforts to restore Peru's megadiverse Andean Forests are rapidly growing. While ecological determinants for restoration success are well known, knowledge on the socio‐economic and governance conditions that allow for the success of ecological restoration using native species is scarce.

Remove saplings early: Cost‐effective strategies to contain tree invasions and prevent their impacts

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 661-676, March 2025.
Our highest‐ranking strategies represent management actions to start implementing in the field as part of an adaptive management plan that iteratively evaluates the validity of our simulation model and updates the management recommendations. Our study can be applied to guide management of invasive pines and replicated with any invasive woody species ...

Sample coverage affects diversity measures of bird communities along a natural recovery gradient of abandoned agriculture in tropical lowland forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 480-491, March 2025.
Our results highlight the importance of standardizing biodiversity measures and incorporating beta diversity in biodiversity monitoring. We demonstrate that taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional bird diversity can be high in secondary forests within smallholder agricultural landscapes.

Tree Diversity Increases Carbon Stocks and Fluxes Above—But Not Belowground in a Tropical Forest Experiment

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 2, February 2025.
We examined the potential of mixed‐species planted forests compared to monospecific forests to act as a nature‐based solution to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. By analysing multiple carbon stocks and fluxes over 16 years in the world's oldest tropical tree diversity experiment, we found that planted forests with five tree ...
