Unraveling Biogeographic Boundaries Within the Sierra Madre Oriental, México: An Endemicity Analysis Using a Taxonomically Diverse Dataset

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
We provide boundaries of the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico through a multi‐taxa endemicity analysis. ABSTRACT The Sierra Madre Oriental (SMO) is a significant mountain range and one of Mexico's 14 biogeographical provinces. Its delimitation has been debated.

Circadian fruit phenology: An overlooked crucial aspect of plant‐frugivore interactions

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 268-280, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The intrinsic ability of plants to face environmental diel changes is paramount for flowering and interactions with pollinators and herbivores. Surprisingly, despite the commendable research efforts on the ecology and evolution of fruit‐frugivore interactions, very ...

The Ginkgo—Covid connection

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 1224-1230, November 2024.
Gingko biloba is an iconic tree with a surprising connection to the SARS and Covid viruses that have impacted human health since 2003. Natural history studies on the ecology of Gingko seed dispersal by Carnivoran scavengers in Asia over the past 30 plus years have elucidated the deep evolutionary history that not only makes these animals effective at ...

Expert assessment of illegal collecting impacts on Venus flytraps and priorities for research on illegal trade

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 5, October 2024.
Abstract Illegal collecting of wild Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) for the horticultural trade represents a persistent threat to populations of the species across their endemic range in the coastal plain of North and South Carolina (United States). Although wild collecting of Venus flytraps is not a novel threat, there has been very little research

Apex predators can structure ecosystems through trophic cascades: Linking the frugivorous behaviour and seed dispersal patterns of mesocarnivores

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 6, Page 1407-1419, June 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Current global change scenarios demand knowledge on how anthropogenic impacts affect ecosystem functioning through changes in food web structure. Frugivorous mesocarnivores are a key link in trophic cascades because, while their abundance and behaviour are usually ...

Survey of flea infestation in cats and dogs in Western Andalusia, Spain: Seasonality and other risk factors for flea infestation

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 244-251, June 2024.
This work supports the preference of the predominant flea species in pets for seasons with higher temperatures and lower percentages of rainfall. C. felis was the dominant flea species, whereas dogs exhibited a greater diversity of flea species. The number of female fleas was higher than males in all identified species and hosts.
