Summary Plants modify their root hydraulics to maintain water status and strategically use soil water, but how they achieve this in the field conditions remains elusive. We developed a method to measure and calculate daily root water uptake, root water potential, and radial root water permeability at different depths in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L ...

The bacterial microbiota of Epichloë fungal endophyte AR135 was dominated by members within the genus Paenibacillus. Cells of Paenibacillus were located on the surface of AR135 fungal hyphae. E100 and E300 strains, identified as Paenibacillus, were isolated from the AR135 mycelium and showed a negative correlation when associated with AR135.

The present work covers a series of novel herbicidal lead structures that possess a hexahydrofuro[3,4‐b]furan scaffold as a structural key feature, carrying ortho‐substituted aryloxy side chains. Based on an optimized synthetic approach a broader structure–activity relationship (SAR) study was carried out delivering some lead structures that show good ...

Lettuce fortification through vitamin B12‐producing bacteria – proof of concept study
Abstract BACKGROUND Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) can be produced de novo only by certain bacteria and archaea. It plays a crucial role in the health of animals and humans, which obtain it only through diet, mainly from animal products. This study aimed to identify endophytic bacterial strains capable of synthesizing vitamin B12 and enriching edible plants ...

Nutritional enhancement of animal feed and forage crops via genetic modification
ABSTRACT Introducing beneficial productivity and nutritional traits into food, feed and forage crops utilising the tools of biotechnology can lead to improvements via genetic modification that cannot be achieved by traditional plant breeding. The timelines and costs are significant, and the regulatory hurdles can lead to some promising traits failing ...

The wheat NLR pair RXL/Pm5e confers resistance to powdery mildew
Summary Powdery mildew poses a significant threat to global wheat production and most cloned and deployed resistance genes for wheat breeding encode nucleotide‐binding and leucine‐rich repeat (NLR) immune receptors. Although two genetically linked NLRs function together as an NLR pair have been reported in other species, this phenomenon has been ...
