Distal to proximal: a continuum of drivers shaping tree growth and carbon partitioning

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 2, Page 729-735, January 2026.
Summary The relationship between tree carbon (C) assimilation and growth is central to understanding tree functioning and forecasting forest C sequestration, yet remains unresolved. The long‐standing debate over C source vs sink limits to growth has yielded invaluable insight, but rests on a false dichotomy.

A multiscale growth atlas of Arabidopsis: linking cell dynamics to organ development

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 299-324, January 2026.
Summary Plant development depends on coordinated growth at cellular and organ scales, yet comparative analyses are hindered by inconsistent reporting of growth across studies. We conducted a meta‐analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana growth dynamics, integrating data from 176 studies to create the first multiscale atlas of plant growth.

PLETHORAs shape Arabidopsis phyllotaxis through modulation of patterning robustness and accelerated inflorescence development

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 495-511, January 2026.
Summary Phyllotaxis is the arrangement of lateral organs on a stem axis, which in Arabidopsis follows a spiral pattern. We previously described that loss of three PLETHORA (PLT) transcription factors shifts the phyllotactic spiral to novel metastable patterns, but the mechanism behind these shifts remained unclear.
