The treatment of choroidal melanoma with 198Au plaque brachytherapy
Radiotherapy and Oncology, 2001Seventy-nine consecutive patients with primary choroidal melanoma were treated with 198 Au plaque brachytherapy at the British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA) between 1992 and 1998 with perioperative ultrasound to confirm plaque placement. Seventy-seven of the 79 patients were analyzable for this study.Five year actuarial disease specific survival ...

Plaque Brachytherapy in the Treatment of Retinoblastoma
1993“It was not until 1929 that Foster Moore, whom I was privileged to assist, became the first to succeed in destroying retinoblastoma and conserve the eye by the interstitial insertion of a radon seed through a puncture in the sclera exactly over the centre of the base of the neoplasm.” With these words, given at the 1962 Doyne Memorial Lecture reviewing

The use of ruthenium plaque brachytherapy in retinoblastoma
Acta Ophthalmologica, 2009Abstract Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of 106Ru plaque brachytherapy for the treatment of retinoblastoma. Methods We reviewed a retrospective, noncomparative case series of 39 children with retinoblastoma treated with 106Ru plaques at the Jules‐Gonin Eye Hospital between October 1992 and July 2006, with 12 months of follow‐up.

An automated approach to seed assignment for eye plaque brachytherapy
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2000Episcleral plaques are commonly used for the treatment of ocular tumours such as choroidal melanoma. Treatment planning involves the assignment of seeds to slots on the plaque to achieve a desired dose rate distribution. Seed assignment is rather straightforward if seeds are ordered on demand.

Custom-made “nag” eye plaques for 125i brachytherapy
International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 2003To report our experience in treating medium-size ocular melanomas with custom-made "Nag" eye plaques.Seventy-eight patients with medium-size ocular melanomas were treated with plaques of 0.6-mm-thick, 18k gold with a radius of curvature of 12 mm to conform to the curvature of the eyeball.

Plaque Brachytherapy for Uveal Melanoma: A Vision Prognostication Model
International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 2012To generate a vision prognostication model after plaque brachytherapy for uveal melanoma. All patients with primary single ciliary body or choroidal melanoma treated with iodine-125 or ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy between January 1, 2005, and June 30, 2010, were included. The primary endpoint was loss of visual acuity.

Optimization of 125I Ophthalmic Plaque Brachytherapy
Medical Dosimetry, 1990Episcleral plaques containing 125I sources are often used in the treatment of ocular melanoma. Within four years post‐treatment, however, the majority of patients experience some visual loss due to radiation retinopathy. The high incidence of late complications suggests that careful treatment optimization may lead to improved outcome.

Ocular Plaque Brachytherapy for Uveal Melanoma and Retinoblastoma
2018The main topic of this chapter is brachytherapy for ocular tumor. A small dish-shaped applicator is temporarily attached outside of the eyeball where the tumor is located, and after adequate irradiation time, it is removed. Because generally eyeball moves quickly and frequently, it is difficult to irradiate intraocular tumor with external beam ...

The treatment of uveal melanoma with iodine plaque brachytherapy
Acta Ophthalmologica, 2009Abstract Purpose To provide an overview of managing uveal melanoma (UM) with iodine brachytherapy (IBT). Methods Personal experience of the author in using IBT since 1990. Results IBT is an effective option for managing a UM of any size, although it is mostly used for medium‐sized tumours, preference being given to ruthenium brachytherapy (RBT) when ...
