From Flybys to Sample Return: A Review of Space Probes and Robotic Sampling Technologies for Small Bodies

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a crucial puzzle piece of deep space exploration, exploring small bodies can provide significant scientific insights and valuable mineral resources. Unlike missions to the Moon and Mars, small‐body missions pose distinct technical challenges, including communication delays, weak gravity, and uncertain environments. This paper reviews a full

Exploiting Device Deformability for Fluid and Particle Manipulation

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Deformable devices enable fluid and particle manipulation modes that are inaccessible to rigid platforms. This review examines soft materials and architectures that translate controlled deformation into microscale fluid operations such as pumping, valving, mixing, and particle handling.

Macroscopic Convective Fluid Flows Arising From Binding of Ions and Small Molecules to Proteins

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
The interaction of ions or small molecules with proteins causes convective flows due to the displacement of water from the hydration shell. As shown, the replacement of the nickel ion removed from urease by EDTA pre‐treatment results in binding‐induced convective fluid flow.

From Passive to Active: Self‐Propelled Colloids in Coatings Formulation and Film Formation

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Self‐propelled Janus colloids are introduced into coating formulations to overcome passive transport limitations during drying. Careful balance of particle activity and evaporation timescales results in their accumulation at both coating interfaces as well as an orientational bias at the top surface.
