Plasma actuated heat transfer

Applied Physics Letters, 2008
We introduce plasmas for film cooling enhancement in gas turbines and other engineering applications. We identify mechanisms to actuate essentially stagnant fluid just downstream of the cooling hole by employing three-dimensional body force for different hole geometries.

Plasma Actuators for Noise Control

International Journal of Aeroacoustics, 2010
In this article the use of plasma actuation for noise control is reviewed. This research follows the tradition of Geoffrey Lilley who conducted the first experiment relevant to aircraft noise, controlling jet noise by disrupting the helical mode of noise radiation.

Supersonic Plasma and Thermal Actuator

46th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2008
In supersonic flows control by thermal and plasma actuators present complex problem because it is necessary to produce vortexes with circulation compared the supersonic flow. Plasma control of supersonic flow is much more difficult problem because of complex plasma chemistry and plasma electrodynamics.

Experimental and numerical characterization of a plasma actuator in continuous and pulsed actuation

Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2012
Abstract Dielectric Barrier Discharge actuators are simulated using experimentally determined body force distributions. This work aims at validation and verification of the force measurement technique and the assumptions involved. The experimental body force distributions are implemented in a numerical flow solver and test cases are simulated for two

Performance Improvement of Turbomachinery Using Plasma Actuators

Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2011
This work deals with the computational modeling of the single dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) plasma actuator and its applications as a flow actuator. In the literature, plasma actuators have been used especially in order to control boundary layer separation.

Diagnostics for characterisation of plasma actuators

Measurement Science and Technology, 2015
The popularity of plasma actuators as flow control devices has sparked a flurry of diagnostic efforts towards their characterisation. This review article presents an overview of experimental investigations employing diagnostic techniques specifically aimed at AC dielectric barrier discharge, DC corona and nanosecond pulse plasma actuators.

Turbulent boundary-layer control with plasma actuators

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2011
This paper reviews turbulent boundary-layer control strategies for skin-friction reduction of aerodynamic bodies. The focus is placed on the drag-reduction mechanisms by two flow control techniques—spanwise oscillation and spanwise travelling wave, which were demonstrated to give up to 45 per cent skin-friction reductions. We show that these techniques

Impact of Pressure and Temperature on the Performance of Plasma Actuators

AIAA Journal, 2010
FB = body force induced on the fluid by the actuator per unit of actuator span, mN=m FNet = net actuator force of (FB F ) per unit of actuator span, mN=m F = shear force at the wall, induced by the plasma actuator flow, per unit of actuator span, mN=m u = axial velocity component, m=s v = normal velocity component, m=s x = axial position with respect ...

Numerical Analysis for Plasma Dynamics in SDBD Plasma Actuator

41st Plasmadynamics and Lasers Conference, 2010
2Time evolution of discharge plasma in the SDBD plasma was simulated by the simplest fluid model; electron and single positive ion species were considered and all volume ionization is the electron-impact ionization. The simulation result in the case of the triangular applied voltage waveform was qualitatively compared with some experimental results ...

Plasma Volumetric Effects on the Force Production of a Plasma Actuator

AIAA Journal, 2010
Dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators are examined experimentally and computationally. Experimental temporal force measurements show that the plasma actuator produces two positive (accelerating) forces per ac cycle. While the plasma is ignited, the actuator experiences an accelerating force, and, when the plasma is extinguished, a decelerating ...
