Molecular Diagnostics of Cold Edge Plasmas

The presence of molecules in cold edge plasmas requires detailed investigations on the basis of simple diagnostic methods. For this purposes, the powerful tool of molecular emission spectroscopy in the visible spectral range is introduced. Applications to divertor plasmas of fusion experiments (AS-DEX Upgrade) are shown.

Edge plasma and fluctuations in TFTR

This thesis concerns the interaction of small, particulate, solid matter - 'dust' - with plasmas, in the plasma edge region where such dust is commonly found. Dust in this region can have a significant impact on a variety of industrial plasma applications, and it is low-temperature industrial plasmas that form the focus of this work.

Neoclassical theory of the plasma edge

Tokamak neoclassical theory is extended to the plasma edge region, where the gradient scale lengths of density, temperature, and rotation speed are comparable to the ion poloidal gyroradius, and where vθBφ/vthBθ∼O(1). A new drift due to viscosity is found to be important.

Abstract In magnetically confined fusion experiments, turbulent transport dominates over collisional transport in the edge gradient region and in the scrape-off layer (SOL). Traditionally concepts as Fick’s law are used to describe turbulent transport by effective diffusion coefficients and convective velocities.

Overview of Plasma Edge Physics

Basic properties of the plasma edge in magnetically confined fusion plasmas are summarised. Starting from the magnetic topology of tokamaks we describe the transport of the scrape-off layer including drifts and the consequences of the electrostatic Debye sheath in front of the plasma facing components.

AbstractA short review of some features of the edge plasma in limiter tokamaks is given. The limits of the simple 1‐D SOL model and the relation between the core plasma are discussed. MARFE phenomena and detached plasma are closely connected with the particle and energy balance of the SOL.
