Nonlinear MHD physics in KSTAR uncovered through advanced diagnostics

open access: yes, 2020
It was a simple idea to confine high-temperature plasmas for sustained nuclear fusion reactions using toroidally symmetric magnetic fields called “tokamak” configuration.

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Material processing by plasma shock wave generated in an inverse Z-pinch plasma expander

open access: yes, 2003
The applicability of plasma shock wave for material processing was investigated using modified inverse Z-pinch device. Shock wave expanding speed and plasma spectral analysis were studied using an internal magnetic, probe and spatially collimated light ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.

Observation of plasma performance improvement by edge ECRH power deposition on Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Edge electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) has been observed to enhance plasma performance on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. By adjusting the ECCD mirror, the power deposition was shifted from the core to the edge region during H ...

Cathodic Cage Plasma Deposition of Nanostructured Cu–Fe–Se Coatings on Poly(methyl Methacrylate)

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Nanostructured Cu–Fe–Se coatings are deposited on PMMA by a modified cathodic cage plasma process, enabling low‐temperature deposition on polymer substrates. A transition from discontinuous to compact morphology is observed with temperature, with optimal properties at 200°C, where improved CuFeSe2‐type bonding, lowest sheet resistance, and favorable ...

Investigating the role of divertor geometry on density build-up in the island divertor

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy
The island divertor has been proposed for power and particle exhaust in stellarators. It is investigated in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) experiment. The divertor capabilities such as particle exhaust or radiative power dissipation scale with the divertor ...
