The Z pinch represents the simplest one-dimensional (1-D) model of the toroidal configuration. The parameters of Z-pinch plasmas can be estimated in a very simple way, if a steady-state equilibrium is assumed (Bennett, 1934; Blackman, 1951). This simplifying assumption rarely can be justified fully, taking into account the intrinsically dynamic nature ...

The interaction of plasma with quartz surfaces in pinch discharges
Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1978Abstract The interaction of plasma with quartz walls was investigated in theta pinch discharges preionized by axial discharges at filling pressures below 12 mTorr. Implantation and sputtering of hydrogen and deuterium in the surface was deduced from neutron yield and Balmer line intensity measurements. A simple model describing these processes yields

Pinch Motion of a Cylindrical Plasma
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1963The self-pinch motion of a cylindrical plasma is analyzed by using the two-fluid model of electrons and ions. The Lorentz force caused by currents flowing through the plasma along the cylindrical axis acts only on the electrons, because most part of the current is carried by the electrons.

Similarity Solutions for Transient Pinched Plasma
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1963A magnetohydrodynamic theory of transient pinched discharge is presented. A cylinder of a perfectly conducting plasma initially submerged in a uniform axial magnetic field is compressed impulsively by an extremely strong external magnetic pressure. Two types of induced magnetic field are considered.

Pinches observed in plasma rail guns
Journal of Applied Mechanics and Technical Physics, 1965The decelerating mechanisms and existence conditions for the pinch structures obtained in plasma rail guns are considered. The plasma is confined by the magnetic field of the self-current. It is shown that under experimental conditions the predominant effect is induction deceleration of the pinches by plasma formed behind the pinches as a result of ...
