ISEE observations of the plasma sheet boundary, plasma sheet, and neutral sheet: 2. Waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1986
The companion paper describes the dc electric and magnetic fields, E × B velocities, plasma flow, composition and ground magnetic activity for two periods in the magnetotail near 20 RE. The relationship of the plasma waves to the dc field characteristics is described herein.

Electric fields in the plasma sheet and plasma sheet boundary layer

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1985
Data from the spherical double probe electric field experiment on ISEE 1 have been used to study a number of plasma sheet/lobe boundary crossings during intervals selected for the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop 6 on March 22 and 31, 1979. These crossings took place during periods of substorm occurrence.

The heliospheric plasma sheet

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1994
High‐resolution magnetic field and plasma data gathered by ISEE 3/ICE during several sector boundary crossings are used to investigate the narrow heliospheric current sheet (≈ 3 × 10³ km to 104 km thick), together with the heliospheric plasma sheet in which it is embedded.

Plasma sheet pressure anisotropies

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1978
The ecliptic plane components of the pressure tensors for low‐energy (<30 keV) electrons and protons have been examined for more than 400 hours of quiet time plasma sheet data from Imp 6 and Imp 8. Individual high time resolution (≲100 s) measurements show that while at times the tensors may be clearly anisotropic with the pressure parallel to the ...

Runaway electrons in plasma current sheets

Physical Review Letters, 1994
It is shown that a runaway electron population accelerates along the main magnetic field in a Sweet-Parker current sheet. After a characteristic distance the entire current is carried by runaways. The thickness of this runaway sheet is much smaller than the original Ohmic sheet. The influence of microinstabilities is discussed.

Comparative study of plasma wave activity in the plasma sheet boundary and near Earth plasma sheet

Advances in Space Research, 1986
Abstract The general structure of low frequency wave activity in the Earth's plasma sheet and its boundary layer is studied on the basis of the measurements made by ‘Prognoz-8’ satellite in the northern night and morning parts of the magnetotail. Pronounced wave activity is permanently observed in the high latitude parts of the plasma sheet boundary ...
