Influence of MHD Turbulence on Ion Kappa Distributions in the Earth's Plasma Sheet as a Function of Plasma β Parameter

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2021
The possible influence of MHD turbulence on the energy distributions of ions in the Earth's plasma sheet was studied using data taken by the THEMIS satellites.

High-beta plasma blobs in the morningside plasma sheet [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 1999
Equator-S frequently encountered, i.e. on 30% of the orbits between 1 March and 17 April 1998, strong variations of the magnetic field strength of typically 5–15-min duration outside about 9RE during the late-night/early-morning hours.

The Role of Mesoscale Plasma Sheet Dynamics in Ring Current Formation

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2021
During geomagnetically active periods ions are transported from the magnetotail into the inner magnetosphere and accelerated to energies of tens to hundreds of keV. These energetic ions, of mixed composition with the most important species being H+ and O+

Chaos in the plasma sheet

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1991
We discuss a simple dynamical model of the magnetotail, in which the electric field in the current sheet evolves in response to a solar‐wind‐induced electric field at the magnetopause, and depends on the specific entropy of the plasma in the plasma sheet.

Survey of deep tail plasma sheet crossings: Plasma sheet distributions resulting from reconnection [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2001
We illustrate the structure of the distant (X < −60 Re) plasma sheet and separatrix layers in terms of low energy ion distributions observed by Geotail. In a statistical survey, ion distributions are classified as single or multi‐component. Multi‐component populations are clearly observed in 68% of tailward flows.

Energy limits of electron acceleration in the plasma sheet during substorms: A case study with the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
We present multipoint observations of earthward moving dipolarization fronts and energetic particle injections from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission with a focus on electron acceleration.

Study of the characteristics of electron firehose unstable conditions in the terrestrial magnetotail plasma sheet

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics
Electron firehose instabilities can be excited at dipolarization fronts and in the magnetic reconnection outflow in the terrestrial magnetotail, but their occurrence rate in the plasma sheet is unclear.

Observation of Transition Boundary between Cold, Dense and Hot, Tenuous Plasmas in the Near-Earth Magnetotail

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2020
Properties of plasmas that constitute the plasma sheet in the near-Earth magnetotail vary according to the solar wind conditions and location in the tail. In this case study, we present multi-spacecraft observations by Cluster that show a transition of

Spatial variation of eddy-diffusion coefficients in the turbulent plasma sheet during substorms [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2009
Study of the plasma turbulence in the central plasma sheet was performed using the Interball-Tail satellite data. Fluctuations of the plasma bulk velocity in the plasma sheet were deduced from the measurements taken by the Corall instrument for ...
