Dynamics of ionospheric plasma in the plasma sheet

open access: yes, 2023
One of the characteristics that distinguishes the storm-time plasma sheet from the non-storm-time plasma sheet is the enhanced contribution of ionospheric heavy ions, particularly O+. Enhanced outflow is observed throughout the auroral oval during a storm, from the dayside cusp region to the nightside auroral region.

Simultaneous measurements of magnetotail dynamics by IMP spacecraft [PDF]

open access: yes
Changes in tail energy density during substorms in the magnetotail are given. In addition to plasma sheet thinnings seen prior to substorm onsets, a gradual decrease in plasma beta was detected in the deep tail which precedes onset and the more prominent

Multiple crossings of a very thin plasma sheet in the Earth's magnetotail [PDF]

open access: yes
High resolution magnetic field, plasma and energetic particle data from the IMP-8 spacecraft were studied for multiple crossings of the Earth's magnetotail plasma sheet when it becomes thin during magnetospheric substorms.

Auroral‐plasma sheet electron anisotropy

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1999
Observations from 90 passes through the high‐latitude extension of the Earth's plasma sheet made by the Hydra particle spectrometer on Polar show clear, repeatable structure in the electron pitch angle anisotropy. Two distinct regions are seen. The first region begins at the poleward edge of the plasma sheet and consists of alternating regions of field‐

An embedded electron current layer observed at the edge of the plasma sheet in the Earth’s magnetotail

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Physics
The formation of an embedded electron current sheet within the magnetotail plasma sheet has been poorly understood. In this article, we present an electron current layer detected at the edge of the magnetotail plasma sheet.

Two-step Emergence of the Magnetic Flux Sheet from the Solar Convection Zone

open access: yes, 2010
We perform two-dimensional MHD simulations on the solar flux emergence. We set the initial magnetic flux sheet at z=-20,000 km in the convection zone. The flux sheet rises through the convective layer due to the Parker instability, however, decelerates ...
