Supersonic Cavity Flow Control Using Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuators

AIAA Journal
A spanwise array of plasma synthetic jets (PSJs) is employed to control the cavity flow at Mach 2.0 with the aim of mixing enhancement. The time responses of the flow to control are diagnosed by a high-speed schlieren imaging system and a planar particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) system.

Plasma Synthetic Jet for Flow Control

40th Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2010
The necessity of having an efficient actuator to control flow has driven ONERA to develop a pioneer actuator called Plasma Synthetic Jet (PSJ). This actuator was inspired by the John Hopkins University device. It produces a high exhaust velocity jet using electrical power.

Semiconductor enhanced plasma synthetic jet actuator

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2020
Abstract Designing a plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) with high efficiency and low driving voltage is a permanent and unchangeable pursuit for researchers. Based on the surface flashover phenomenon of semiconductors, a novel semiconductor enhanced PSJA (SEPSJA) is put forward.

Experimental and numerical investigation of a self-supplementing dual-cavity plasma synthetic jet actuator

Plasma Science and Technology, 2023
The primary issue of plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) is the performance attenuation at high frequencies. To solve this issue, a self-supplementing, dual-cavity, plasma synthetic jet actuator (SD-PSJA) is designed, and the static properties of SD ...

On Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuators

44th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2006
The term plasma actuator refers to an asymmetric arrangement of two electrodes (typically rectangular strips) separated by dielectric material that can be used as active flow control devices. A plasma actuator design consisting of an annular electrode array, the plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA), is experimentally investigated in this paper.

Experimental characterization of a modified high-speed plasma synthetic jet actuator with oblique-slot exit

The Physics of Fluids, 2023
In the field of flow control research, oblique jets are known to offer several advantages over vertical jets. To gain a comprehensive insight into the flow field characteristics of a plasma synthetic jet actuator with an oblique-slot exit, the related ...

A study on flow control in a hypersonic inlet using a plasma synthetic jet actuator

The Physics of Fluids, 2022
The plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) has been proven to have potential for shock wave control in the supersonic/hypersonic flow. To evaluate the possibility for the PSJA applied in the hypersonic inlet under a Mach number greater than the design ...

Flow control with plasma synthetic jet actuators

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2007
This paper presents an experimental investigation of the characteristics of a plasma actuator design for flow control consisting of an annular electrode in quiescent and flat plate boundary layer flows. In quiescent flow, the circular plasma region produced on actuation was observed to generate a vertical zero-net mass flux (or synthetic) jet, hence ...
