Exercise stroke volume relative to plasma-volume expansion

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1988
The effects of plasma-volume (PV) expansion on stroke volume (SV) (CO2 rebreathing) during submaximal exercise were determined. Intravenous infusion of 403 +/- 21 ml of a 6% dextran solution before exercise in the upright position increased SV 11% (i.e., 130 +/- 6 to 144 +/- 5 ml; P less than 0.05) in untrained males (n = 7). Further PV expansion (i.e.

CHANGES IN PLASMA VOLUME

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1941
To the Editor:— In studying the behavior of the plasma volume during diuresis it is apparent that changes in the plasma volume will depend for their magnitude on the intensity of the diuresis in proportion to the volume of the plasma. To illustrate the superiority of the edematous dog to the edematous cardiac patient for experimental purposes in this ...

Analysis of red cell mass and plasma volume in patients with polycythemia.

Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, 2009
CONTEXT Polycythemia describes an increased proportion of red blood cells in the peripheral blood. In absolute polycythemia, there is increased red cell mass (RCM) with normal plasma volume, in contrast with apparent polycythemia, in which there is ...

Chronic heart failure leads to an expanded plasma volume and pseudoanaemia, but does not lead to a reduction in the body's red cell volume.

European Heart Journal, 2008
Aims Chronic heart failure (CHF) is frequently associated with a decreased haemoglobin level, whereas the mechanism remains largely unknown. Methods and results One hundred consecutive CHF patients without anaemia or renal dysfunction based on non ...

Plasma Volume Changes in the Neonate

Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1962
The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate shifts of plasma between vascular and extravascular spaces during the first 2½ hours of life. Such shifts in plasma volume have been postulated by Marks et al. in order to account for the significant rise in packed cell volume that they demonstrated within the first 2½ hours of life.

Plasma volume late in pregnancy

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1950
Abstract Plasma volume was determined by chromatographic extraction and spectrophotometric determination of Evans blue in pregnant women a month before delivery and at term, as well as in nonpregnant control subjects. The mean value at term was not significantly lower than that at the the thirty-sixth week.

The Effect of Large Volume Paracentesis on Plasma Volume—A Cause of Hypovolemia?

Hepatology, 1985
Large volume paracentesis, while effectively relieving symptoms in patients with tense ascites, has been generally avoided due to reports of complications attributed to an acute reduction in intravascular volume. Measurements of plasma volume in these subjects have been by indirect methods and have not uniformly confirmed ...

Plasma volume restoration with salt tablets and water after bed rest prevents orthostatic hypotension and changes in supine hemodynamic and endocrine variables.

American Journal of Physiology. Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 2005
Head-down bed rest changes the values of many cardiovascular and endocrine variables and also elicits significant hypovolemia. Because previous studies had not controlled for hypovolemia, it is unknown whether the reported changes were primary effects of

Safety of Plasma Volume Expanders

The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 2011
Hypovolemia from a range of etiologies can lead to severe morbidity and mortality unless blood volume and tissue perfusion are restored. The treatment of hypovolemia has included the improvement and restoration of blood volume loss by the intravenous infusion of plasma expanding therapeutic agents.

Renal function and plasma volume following ultramarathon cycling.

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2005
In recreational cyclists marathon cycling influences renal function only on a minimal scale. Respective information on extreme ultramarathon cycling in better trained athletes is not available.
