Range finding of Alfvén oscillations and direction finding of ion-cyclotron waves by using the ground-based ULF finder [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 1997
A new approach to the problem of direction and distance finding of magnetospheric ULF oscillations is described. It is based on additional information about the structure of geoelectromagnetic field at the Earth's surface which is contained in the ...

Model study of plasmapause motion [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 1970
The ambient plasma in the equatorial plane is predominantly subject to the E×B drift. By approximating the earth's magnetic field by a dipole, characteristic steady state streamlines in the equatorial plane are determined, assuming the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere is characterized by a constant electric field directed from ...

Validation of VERB‐3D Simulation Results in Response to the COSPAR ISWAT Challenge

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract In response to the first long‐term simulation challenge issued by the COSPAR International Space Weather Action Team (ISWAT) G3‐04 team (“Internal Charging Effects and the Relevant Space Environment”), we evaluate the performance of the Versatile Electron Radiation Belt‐3D model by simulating the radiation belt electron dynamics for the entire

Simulation of Van Allen probes plasmapause encounters

open access: yes, 2014
We use an E × B-driven plasmapause test particle (PTP) simulation to provide global contextual information for in situ measurements by the Van Allen Probes (Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP)) during 15-20 January 2013.

Guiding Medium Radio Waves in the Magnetosphere: Features and Geophysical Conditions

open access: yesAtmosphere
We present experimental results related to the features and geophysical conditions for the occurrence of the long-delay echo (LDE) signals in the medium-wave (MW) frequency range observed on 20 January 2025, at the Gor’kovskaya observatory near St ...

Pc2-3 geomagnetic pulsations on the ground, in the ionosphere, and in the magnetosphere: MM100, CHAMP, and THEMIS observations [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2015
We analyze Pc2-3 pulsations recorded by the CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite in the F layer of the Earth's ionosphere, on the ground, and in the magnetosphere during quiet geomagnetic conditions.

An alternative interpretation of Jupiter's “plasmapause”

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1976
It has recently been suggested that Io is an important source of ions for the plasma detected by Pioneer 10 in the inner magnetosphere of Jupiter. Assuming this to be true, we show that near the orbit of Io the central collector of the Pioneer‐10 plasma instrument could detect only inwardly diffusing ions created at a radial distance greater than that ...

Frequency‐Dependent Latitudinal Distributions of Plasmaspheric Plume Hiss Directionality and Amplitude

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Plasmaspheric plume hiss plays a crucial role in shaping Earth's electron radiation belts and influencing magnetosphere–ionosphere energy coupling. However, its generation mechanism remains contested between cyclic‐linear and localized‐nonlinear models. By analyzing over 64,000 high‐resolution plume hiss wave segments from the Van Allen Probes

Wide-banded NTC radiation: local to remote observations by the four Cluster satellites [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2015
The Cluster multi-point mission offers a unique collection of non-thermal continuum (NTC) radio waves observed in the 2–80 kHz frequency range over almost 15 years, from various view points over the radiating plasmasphere.

Auroral patches in the vicinity of the plasmapause

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1977
Unusual aurora‐like patches have been observed equatorward of the diffuse auroral boundary by the ISIS‐2 scanning auroral photometer. These rare features are observed predominantly in the evening sector and appear to corotate with the earth and to have lifetimes longer than two hours.
