Plasmodium vivax trophozoites insensitive to chloroquine [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2008
AbstractBackgroundPlasmodium vivaxis a major cause of malaria and is still primarily treated with chloroquine. Chloroquine inhibits the polymerization of haem to inert haemozoin. Free haem monomers are thought to catalyze oxidative damage to thePlasmodiumspp. trophozoite, the stage when haemoglobin catabolism is maximal.

The Diagnostic Performance of a Sysmex XN‐31 Automated Malaria Analyzer vs. Expert Microscopy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Laboratory Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Malaria is a common and life‐threatening infection. Malaria diagnosis needs to be fast and reliable. Although malaria microscopy is currently the gold standard, it is laborious, requires extensive training, and relies heavily on the proficiency of microscopists.

Towards Physarum Binary Adders [PDF]

open access: yesBiosystems Volume 101, Issue 1, July 2010, Pages 51-58, 2010
Plasmodium of \emph{Physarum polycephalum} is a single cell visible by unaided eye. The plasmodium's foraging behaviour is interpreted in terms of computation. Input data is a configuration of nutrients, result of computation is a network of plasmodium's cytoplasmic tubes spanning sources of nutrients.

Malaria "diagnosis" and diagnostics in Afghanistan. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In many malaria-endemic areas, including Afghanistan, overdiagnosis of malaria is common. Even when using parasite-based diagnostic tests prior to treatment, clinicians commonly prescribe antimalarial treatment following negative test results.

Expression and purification of E140 protein antigen fragments of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium berghei for serological assays

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 5, Page 690-698, May 2025.
We provide a step‐by‐step guide for producing E140 antigen fragments from Plasmodium berghei (Pb1) and Plasmodium vivax (Pv1). Pb1/Pv1 are expressed in E. coli, solubilized by freeze–thawing, refolded by slow dilution, purified by affinity chromatography (IMAC), then concentrated and subjected to quality control.

PLASMODIUM VIVAX BLOOD-STAGE DYNAMICS [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology, 2002
We examine the dynamics of parasitemia and gametocytemia reflected in the preintervention charts of 221 malaria-naive U.S. neurosyphilis patients infected with the St. Elizabeth strain of Plasmodium vivax, for malariatherapy, focusing on the 109 charts for which 15 or more days of patency preceded intervention and daily records encompassed an average ...

Insights into the invasion biology of Plasmodium vivax [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2013
Plasmodium vivax is the most widely distributed human malaria parasite outside sub Sahara regions of Africa causing huge morbidity and occasionally being severe and fatal (Kochar et al., 2005; Tjitra et al., 2008). Invasion of host erythrocytes is essential for development of disease and the process varies greatly among different malaria parasites ...

Epidemiology of Latency and Relapse in Plasmodium vivax Malaria [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
Malaria is a major contributor to health burdens throughout the regions where it is endemic. Historically, it was believed that there was limited morbidity and essentially no mortality associated with Plasmodium vivax; however, evidence from diverse settings now suggests that infections with P. vivax can be both severe and fatal.
