Plastic debris in lakes and reservoirs [PDF]
Plastic debris is thought to be widespread in freshwater ecosystems globally1. However, a lack of comprehensive and comparable data makes rigorous assessment of its distribution challenging2,3. Here we present a standardized cross-national survey that assesses the abundance and type of plastic debris (>250 μm) in freshwater ecosystems.

Biofilms on Plastic Debris and the Microbiome. [PDF]
Plastic pollution has become a global environmental problem, and the large number of microorganisms attached to plastic debris in the environment has become a hot topic due to their rapid response to pollutants and environmental changes. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing to investigate the microbial community structure of and explore ...

Export of Plastic Debris by Rivers into the Sea [PDF]
A substantial fraction of marine plastic debris originates from land-based sources and rivers potentially act as a major transport pathway for all sizes of plastic debris. We analyzed a global compilation of data on plastic debris in the water column across a wide range of river sizes.

Plastic debris in the coastal environment: The invincible threat? Abundance of buried plastic debris on Malaysian beaches [PDF]
Studies on marine debris have gained worldwide attention since many types of debris have found their way into the food chain of higher organisms. Thus, it is crucial that more focus is given to this area in order to curb contaminations in sea food.

Monitoring Models for Plastic Debris
To strengthen monitoring for plastic debris in the ocean, our paper compared debris distributions of 2 special Garbage Patches (The North Pacific Central Gyre and Kuroshio Current area). And then we developed a computer-based optimal searching model to monitor formation and changes of debris in the oceans.

When ingested by organisms, plastic debris can induce airway and digestive tract obstruction, leading to malnutrition and death. More pernicious effects come from the chemicals added to plastics (additives) to give them their resistance properties, color, flame-retardant properties, etc.

Plastic debris on Pacific Islands: Ecological and health implications [PDF]
Plastic debris is a worldwide problem. This is particularly acute in the Pacific region, where its scale is a reason for serious concerns. There is an obvious need for studies to assess the extent to which plastic debris affects the Pacific. Therefore, this research aims to address this need by undertaking a systematic assessment of the ecological and ...

The Montreal Protocol and the fate of environmental plastic debris. [PDF]
AbstractMicroplastics (MPs) are an emerging class of pollutants in air, soil and especially in all aquatic environments. Secondary MPs are generated in the environment during fragmentation of especially photo-oxidised plastic litter. Photo-oxidation is mediated primarily by solar UV radiation.

Plastic debris in the open ocean. [PDF]
Significance High concentrations of floating plastic debris have been reported in remote areas of the ocean, increasing concern about the accumulation of plastic litter on the ocean surface. Since the introduction of plastic materials in the 1950s, the global production of plastic has increased rapidly and will continue in the coming ...

Towards the Spectral Mapping of Plastic Debris on Beaches [PDF]
Floating and washed ashore marine plastic debris (MPD) is a growing environmental challenge. It has become evident that secluded locations including the Arctic, Antarctic, and remote islands are being impacted by plastic pollution generated thousands of kilometers away.
