Dynamically Actuated Reconfigurable Topographical Surface Enables Active Control of Implant‐Associated Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dynamically actuated reconfigurable topographical surface (DARTS) integrates contact‐mediated bactericidal nanotopography with programmable mechanical actuation to actively disrupt bacterial biofilms. Dynamic surface reconfiguration enhances bacterial killing and suppresses implant‐associated infections in vivo, providing a new strategy for active ...

Construction of a Real-Time Detection for Floating Plastics in a Stream Using Video Cameras and Deep Learning

open access: yesSensors
Rivers act as natural conduits for the transport of plastic debris from terrestrial sources to marine environments. Accurately quantifying plastic debris in surface waters is essential for comprehensive environmental impact assessments. However, research

An Integrated Oxygen‐Supplying Device and Predictive Multiphysics Model for Extended Ambient Transport of Insulin‐Producing Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cell therapies typically rely on cold‐chain logistics and cryopreservation, limiting access and compromising cell quality. Here, a dual‐chamber device separates an oxygen‐supplying chamber from a hyaluronic acid cargo chamber, sustaining oxygen delivery for over 70 h and enabling ambient‐temperature shipment.

The Role of Mangrove Density in Marine Debris Trapping: A Case Study of Baros Coast, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

open access: yesCroatian Journal of Fisheries
The increase in plastic production has led to a significant accumulation of plastic debris in the environment, particularly in coastal and marine ecosystems.

Marine Litter Distribution and Density in European Seas, from the Shelves to Deep Basins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Anthropogenic litter is present in all marine habitats, from beaches to the most remote points in the oceans. On the seafloor, marine litter, particularly plastic, can accumulate in high densities with deleterious consequences for its inhabitants.

Biodegradable 3D‐Printable and Coatable Antifouling Composites for Marine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Marine biofouling damages submerged surfaces and raises greenhouse gas emissions. Biodegradable antifouling biocomposites were developed by hot‐mixing beeswax, Tween 80, and calcium stearate or stearic acid. Adjusting the component ratio enables processing via hot‐pressing, 3D‐printing, or dip‐coating.

Plastic debris entangled silky shark landed [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Several species of marine fishes have been documented as entangled in manmade debris in oceans, but comparatively few reports are available globally on sharks.

An assessment of macroplastic litter surrounding four freshwater lakes in Columbus, Georgia. [PDF]

open access: yesThe Young Researcher, 2020
The United Nations Environment Programme identifies plastic pollution as a major environmental issue (Blettler, Ulla, Rabuffetti, & Garello, 2017). Despite this, researchers note a distinct lack of research regarding plastic pollution in the world’s ...

Plastic debris facilitates the survival of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens in an urban agricultural environment [PDF]

open access: yes
Rapid urbanisation in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) has driven the expansion of urban and peri-urban farming to enhance food security.

Intracrystalline Void‐Mediated Toughening of Brittle Crystals in Quail Eggshells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In quail eggshells, the high density and disordered arrangement of intracrystalline voids inhibit lattice cleavage, suppress long‐range crack propagation, and promote deformation twinning and quasi‐plasticity, serving as an essential toughening motif. We show that these voids remain within a narrow subcritical size range and therefore predominantly do ...
