On the lumped damage modelling of reinforced concrete beams and arches

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2020
The analysis of reinforced concrete structures can be performed by means of experiments or numerical studies. The first way is usually quite expensive, so the second one sometimes is a good option to understand the physical behaviour of actual structures.

Plastic hinges as phase transitions in strain softening beams [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, 2007
A jump between the upper yield point and lower yield point is well evident in strain driven tests on lowcarbon steel bars. However, in the constitutive equations commonly used to model the elastic-plastic flexure of beams this jump is usually neglected.

Plastic hinge locations in steel columns

open access: yesBulletin of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, 2010
Some standards for the design of steel structures attempt to encourage column yielding at the member ends, rather than along the column length during inelastic action such as may occur during strong earthquake shaking. In this paper, effects of residual stress and stability are considered separately and then combined to obtain equations that are more ...

Seismic analysis of pile in liquefiable soil and plastic hinge [PDF]

open access: yesGeotechnical Research, 2017
Liquefaction is one of the leading seismic actions that cause extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure during earthquakes. In many historic cases, plastic hinge formations in piles were observed at inexplicable locations. This project investigated the behaviour of piled foundations within soils susceptible to liquefaction by using numerical ...

Influence of Different European Code Provisions for Capacity Design on the Seismic Performance of Reinforced Concrete Frames

open access: yesBuildings, 2023
Performance-based seismic codes ensure proper inelastic behaviour of reinforced concrete frames through capacity design, among others. This strategy relies not only on avoiding brittle failures and providing ductility to plastic hinges but also in their ...

An investigation of the effectiveness of the framing systems in steel structures subjected to blast loading

open access: yesJournal of Civil Engineering and Management, 2014
The effectiveness of different framing systems for three seismically designed steel frame structures subjected to blast loading is investigated. The three faming systems considered are: a moment resisting frame (MRF), a concentrically braced frame (CBF ...

Ligand‐dependent transcriptional heterogeneity in cell cycle gene expression delays G1/S entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
EGF and HRG induce distinct G1/S progression programs in ErbB2‐amplified BT474 breast cancer cells. Despite activating the potent ErbB2–ErbB3 heterodimer, HRG does not accelerate cell‐cycle entry. Instead, EGF promotes earlier restriction‐point passage via ERK–FOS signaling, whereas HRG activates the AKT–MYC axis, driving transcriptional heterogeneity ...

Protocol for quantifying miRNA trafficking across the endosomal membrane

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An in vitro protocol measures miRNA uptake into endosomes isolated from mammalian cell extracts, which are free of subcellular contaminants. Performed at 37 °C in the presence of ATP, it ensures the import of single‐stranded miRNA into the endosomal lumen.

Investigation on the Bending Mechanism of Single-Crystal Copper Under High Bending Rates via Molecular Dynamics

open access: yesMicromachines
Leaf spring-type flexible hinges serve as critical transmission components in kilogram quantization energy balance systems. Investigating their bending behavior is crucial for enhancing measurement accuracy and ensuring structural reliability.

Discrete mechanical growth model for plant tissue.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
We present a discrete mechanical model to study plant development. The method is built up of mass points, springs and hinges mimicking the plant cell wall's microstructure. To model plastic growth the resting lengths of springs are adjusted; when springs
