A plastic optical fiber tap has been developed. The plastic optical fiber is bent over a small radius, which causes core modes to be converted into cladding modes. These converted high order modes can then be removed from the fiber by attaching refractive-index-adjusted materials.

Plastic Fiber Optic Simulations
Fifth International Conference on Information Technology: New Generations (itng 2008), 2008Plastic fiber optics media is viable for small networks. The current applications include data distribution in aircraft and automobiles. Plastic fiber systems being an order of magnitude less expensive than silica fiber optic systems and being more robust have applications in other traditional data communication systems.

Characteristics of plastic optical fibers (POF)s, i.e., handling ease because of their good ductility, splicing ease to each other and to light sources because of their large fiber diameter and high numerical aperture, processability, and high flexibility notwithstanding their larger fiber diameters, have attracted much attention.

Development Of Plastic Optical Fiber Devices and Multiple-Core Plastic Optical Fibers
Organic Thin Films for Photonic Applications, 1995A vast amount of research has been done on optical fibers. Most of the work has been done on Glass optical fibers (GOFs). Much less has been done on Plastic optical fibers (POFs), and very little with regards to applications of nonlinear optics.1 Plastic optical fibers are currently under intense investigation and are used for Local Area Networks (LAN),

Optical filtering in plastic optical fibers
2013 15th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2013Nowadays, the possibility of the fibre to the home (FTTH) for simultaneous transmission of different services such as internet, telephone, digital television is a reality. However, to meet the more demanding expectations of the end user, it is necessary to improve the physical infrastructure of the existing communication networks in order to obtain the

Fiber optic vibration sensor using bifurcated plastic optical fiber
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2016An extrinsic fiber optic vibration sensor is demonstrated for a fiber optic displacement sensor based on a bundled multimode fiber to measure a vibration frequency ranging from 100 until 3000 Hz. The front slope has a sensitivity of 0.1938mV/mm and linearity of 99.7% within a measurement range between 0.15-3.00 mm.

A novel plastic optical fiber heating furnace for plastic optical fiber drawing tower
2012 2nd International Conference on Consumer Electronics, Communications and Networks (CECNet), 2012This paper introduces the design of heating furnace with gradient temperature distribution for plastic optical fiber drawing tower. The heating furnace is of cylinder profile, and can be divided into five layers from outside to inside, that is, the shell layer, insulation layer, heating silk layer, buffer layer, and drawing layer.
