Novel plastic optical-fiber connector

SPIE Proceedings, 1994
The upside down taper lens (UDTL) optical fiber ends are formed by a heating method. This new type of microlens can be used to make optical fiber connector between two fibers. In this paper, using plastic optical fiber, a single installation which are needed in the making UDTL fiber ends is described.

Properties of plastic optical fibers

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1998
Experimental and theoretical studies of the optical properties of large-core step-index plastic optical fibers (POF’s) and graded-index POF’s are reported. A set of criteria and analyses of physical parameters is developed in the context of major issues of POF applications in short-distance communication systems.

Plastic Optical Fiber Applications

2005
Nowadays cabling based on symmetrical copper cables is dominant in almost all telecom applications; glass fibers predominate in long-distance networks. Whereas just a few years ago l0-Mbit/s Ethernet (l0BaseT) had the main share of interfaces in star or tree structures, today’s pure star networks are predominantly set up on the basis of 100-Mbit/s ...

Low-loss plastic optical fibers

Optical Fiber Communication, 1983
PURPOSE:To reduce losses owing to structural asymmetry by forming a core consisting of a synthetic high polymer and a sleeve on the core surface layer part by means of a polymer of a refractive index lower than that through plasma polymn. CONSTITUTION:A flowmeter 4 and a flow rate control valve 5 are provided to a passage 3, and a monomer 2 is ...

Advance of Plastic Optical Fibers

MRS Proceedings, 1989
AbstractPlastic optical fibers (so called POF) are already in wide use in a large number of fields. This paper gives an overview of the field including the advantages of plastic optical fibers, the various types of fibers and the materials in them. Then, the properties of three types of fibers which have recently been developed, are discussed. The first

Plastic fiber-optic hybrid sensor

2005 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2005
The concept for highly sensitive three-dimensional fiber bending using a single plastic optical fiber is presented. It is based on macrobending a plastic optical fiber with two-dimensional side disturbances.

Plastic-optical-fiber-based parallel optical interconnects

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 1999
The implementation of plastic optical fibers (POFs) in parallel optical interconnects is reported. 8/spl times/8 array interconnects with a potential of >100-Gb/s accumulated data throughput have been demonstrated using 125 /spl mu/m-diameter POFs. The technology, the limitations and the potential of POF-interconnects are discussed.
