Plastic pollution on the world’s coral reefs
Coral reefs are losing the capacity to sustain their biological functions1. In addition to other well-known stressors, such as climatic change and overfishing1, plastic pollution is an emerging threat to coral reefs, spreading throughout reef food webs2, and increasing disease transmission and structural damage to reef organisms3.

Attitudes towards Plastic Pollution: A Review and Mitigations beyond Circular Economy
Plastic pollution has received unprecedented attention globally, and there are increasing calls to control it. Despite this, the uptrends of plastic consumption and mismanaged plastic waste show little sign of reversal.

Legacy oceanic plastic pollution must be addressed to mitigate possible long-term ecological impacts
Scientific research over the past decade has demonstrated that plastic in our oceans has detrimental consequences for marine life at all trophic levels. As countries negotiate an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, the focus is

Stakeholder alliances are essential to reduce the scourge of plastic pollution. [PDF]
Progress to reduce plastic pollution has been painfully slow and the consequent damage to the natural environment and to human health is likely to increase further.

Plastic pollution accumulating in an area of the environment is considered “poorly reversible”, if natural mineralization processes occurring there are slow and engineered remediation solutions are improbable. Should negative outcomes in these areas arise as a consequence of plastic pollution, they will be practically irreversible.

Plastic pollution in riverbeds fundamentally affects natural sand transport processes. [PDF]
Over the past 50 years, rivers have become increasingly important vectors for plastic pollution. Lowland riverbeds exhibit coherent morphological features including ripple and dune bedforms, which transport sediment downstream via well-understood ...
