Characteristics of Plastic Scintillators
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1957Information on the light output of a group of organic solutes in polyvinyltoluene has been obtained. The primary solutes studied are p-terphenyl and 2-phenyl-5-(4-biphenylyl)-1,3,4 oxadiazole (PBD), the latter being the most efficient. Of the secondary solutes studied, 4,4′-diphenylstilbene and 2,5-dibiphenylyl oxazole (BBO) are the most efficient. The

Abstract Fifteen anthracene derivatives have been synthesized, and their absorption and fluorescence spectra have been measured. The spectra will be discussed in this paper. According to the spectra, some of anthracene derivatives synthesized here are better wavelength shifters than the compounds previously described in the literature.

Hard X-Ray, Gamma-Ray, and Neutron Detector Physics XXII, 2020
In 2010, light scattering defects were observed in several fielded panels of poly(vinyltoluene) plastic scintillators that had experienced losses in radiation sensitivity. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory first deduced that the defects were caused by trapped water.

Preparation of Large Plastic Scintillators
Review of Scientific Instruments, 1957A process is described for the manufacture of disks of plastic scintillators weighing over 100 kg and composed of polystyrene (∼99%), p-terphenyl (∼1%), and POPOP (∼0.03%). The design and performance of two large plastic scintillation detectors for cosmic rays are discussed.

Radiation damage in plastic scintillators
Conference Record of the 1991 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference, 2002Summary form only given, as follows. Radiation damage in 408 and 412 plastic scintillators and two new plastic fibers has been studied by measuring, in the BNL (Brookhaven National Laboratory) radiation facility, the scintillation output during irradiation with /sup 60/Co gamma rays at room temperature. In all studies the luminescence intensity changes,

Time response of plastic scintillators
Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1974Abstract Time-response characteristics of eight commercial plastic scintillators have been studied. Samples were excited by 50 ps electron or bremsstrahlung pulses. Sampling techniques were used to record the signal from a fast vacuum photodiode. Effects of surface preparation on time response were studied.

Mass discrimination with plastic scintillators
Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1962Abstract Mass discrimination of protons, deuterons and tritons, is shown to be possible from 8 to 50 MeV, by obtaining a suitable product of the outputs of d E /d x and E plastic scintillation detectors in a counter telescope. The non-linear energy response of the scintillator NE102 is taken into account in the calculation of the function which ...

New types of plastic scintillators
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, 1982Abstract Two types of scintillators based on a copolymer of methylmethacrylate and styrene and a crosslinking polystyrene were developed. These have as good mechanical properties as Plexipop. The results on some of more than a hundred samples of different compositions examined on their light output, attenuation lenght and decay time showed that ...

Development of plastic scintillation fiber
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1987Abstract We developed a plastic scintillation fiber (PSF) with a light-attenuation length as long as 2.8 m which was applied for a calorimeter. The performance of a calorimeter made of PSF and lead with a new method of fabrication is presented.

Characteristics of plastic scintillator granules
Journal of Applied Spectroscopy, 1967Methods are described for measuring the absorption coefficient of the material, the absorption coefficient of a layer of granules, and the scintillation performance. The theory of light diffusion in a scattering medium is used and is compared with experiment.
