Plastic shrinkage in concrete structures with blended cement vs ordinary Portland cement

Proceedings of Civil Engineering Research Symposium 2025
Plastic shrinkage cracking is a critical early-age problem in concrete structures that poses a direct threat to long-term durability, serviceability, and aesthetics.

Influence of shrinkage-reducing admixtures on the reduction of plastic shrinkage cracking in concrete

Cement and Concrete Research, 2009
Fresh concrete exposed to high evaporation rates is prone to plastic shrinkage cracking, especially in structures with large surface area/volume ratios. The present work shows that the reduction of the surface tension of the mixing water is an effective way for decreasing such cracking.

The influence of solar radiation on plastic shrinkage cracking in concrete

Cement and Concrete Composites, 2021
Abstract Plastic shrinkage cracking (PSC) in concrete is related to the amount and rate of free pore water loss due to evaporation. This study investigates the influence of solar radiation on evaporation, the concrete temperature, plastic shrinkage and cracking.

Free and restrained plastic shrinkage of cementitious materials made of engineered kraft pulp fibres

Construction and Building Materials, 2019
Early age cracks caused by plastic shrinkage of cementitious materials is a major problem in concrete structures. These cracks allow ingress of water, chlorides, and other deleterious materials and minerals into the material, causing early deterioration ...

A poromechanics model for plastic shrinkage of fresh cementitious materials

Cement and Concrete Research, 2018
When fresh cementitious materials are exposed to evaporation, drying of the pore fluid leads to capillary pressure development and plastic shrinkage.

Mitigation of plastic shrinkage in fly ash concrete using basalt fibres

Canadian journal of civil engineering (Print), 2019
Many durability related problems in concrete structures are caused due to early-age cracking. Though early-age cracking is not detrimental to the structure, this will open up the way for the long-term durability issues, hence, needs to be mitigated ...

Evaporation-Plastic Shrinkage-Cracking: Overview of Approaches and Discussion

Advanced Materials Research, 2015
Plastic shrinkage is a complex phenomenon to understand and to control. This volume contraction at early age is accentuate by aggressive climatic conditions (high temperature, windy weather, low humidity, etc...) and can lead to cracking, which affects the aesthetics and especially the durability of concrete.

Plastic shrinkage and cracking risk of recycled aggregates concrete

Construction and Building Materials, 2016
Abstract This paper presents the results of experimental research on recycled concrete at early age. The influence of recycled gravel and sand (RG and RS) and initial water saturation of RG on plastic shrinkage and cracking sensitivity was investigated.

Influence of mix and environment on plastic shrinkage cracking

Magazine of Concrete Research, 2003
The influence of mix constituents (including corresponding concrete grade), retarding and air entraining admixtures and PFA additives, and the effect of environmental factors on plastic shrinkage cracking of mortar specimens is reported, supplemented by concurrent evaporation and bleeding tests.

Plastic shrinkage cracking of fiber reinforced concrete

2006
The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of fiber volume (i.e control, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) and aspect ratios of 55, 65, and 80 of hooked-end steel fibers on the behaviour of plastic shrinkage cracking during the first few hours after mixing.
