Modelling plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
Abstract A numerical analysis of plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure based upon the finite difference method is presented. This new method permits modelling easily fatigue crack growth as well as contacts between fracture faces, without requiring sophisticated algorithms.

Asymmetric crack wake plasticity – a reason for roughness induced crack closure

Acta Materialia, 2004
Asymmetric arrangement of geometrically necessary dislocations in the wake of a crack tip induces a mismatch of fracture surfaces. It can explain the occurrence of the roughness induced crack closure far behind the fatigue crack tip. The asymmetric arrangement of geometrically necessary dislocations is verified by local crystal orientation measurements

Influence of Material Parameters on Plasticity Induced Crack Closure

Key Engineering Materials, 2009
Plasticity Induced Crack Closure (PICC) is an important fatigue phenomenon affecting crack growth under cyclic loading, which makes important to consider it in the design of components. In this paper a parametric study that correlates elastic-plastic material parameters with plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) is presented.

On crack tip shielding due to plasticity‐induced closure during an overload

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2010
ABSTRACTThe mechanisms underlying the plasticity‐induced shielding of a crack tip during fatigue are investigated at both constant amplitude loading and in a case with a substantial single‐cycle overload. A recently developed mathematical model of the stress field around the crack was fitted to maps of isochromatic fringe data obtained from phase ...

Numerical study of the effect of plastic wake on plasticity‐induced fatigue crack closure

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2009
ABSTRACTFatigue crack closure is strongly influenced by the plastic wake developed because of the action of precedent cycles. It is related to the load sequence and is an additional difficulty for its determination. Finite‐element method has been an alternative for the study of crack closure, commonly in constant‐amplitude loading.

Plasticity Induced Fatigue Crack Closure

1988
Experimental measurements of plasticity-induced crack closure related factors were made on the aluminum alloy 7091-T7E69 using high resolution microscopy techniques. Two stress intensity factors were examined at a stress ratio of 0.1. The length of open crack as a function of load magnitude and the load required to open the crack to its tip were ...

Effect of Underloads on Plasticity-Induced Crack Closure: A Numerical Analysis

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 2019
The effect of underloads is mostly quantified by the averaged effect on the fatigue crack growth rate, and the transient behavior is rarely investigated. The objective of this paper is to study the mechanisms behind the effect of underloads, periodic underloads, and underloads combined with overloads.

Three-Dimensional aspects of plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1989
A three-dimensional elastoplastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack growth and closure in a center-crack tension specimen was performed in order to investigate the crack opening stress as a function of specimen thickness under constant amplitude loading conditions. Elastic-perfectly plastic conditions were assumed and cycle loading was kept at R

Dynamic Analysis of Plasticity-Induced Fatigue Crack Closure

1989
Crack closure during fatigue crack propagation is a phenomenon widely investigated in the last years by experimental means. Researches have achieved the knowledge of the different causes of the problem: the roughness-induced crack closure, the oxide -induced crack closure, the compressive stresses in the plastic zone near the crack tip produced by ...
