Although the shelf seas stand for only 9 % of the ocean's area and 0.5 % of its volume, they are important for the social, economical and biological values they provide. The shelf sea of Yucatán shows interesting features: it is a shallow and tropical body of water with a gentle slope. It is the largest shelf in México and its coast is zonally oriented.
