A technique for electronic platelet counting is described. The erythrocytes in whole blood were removed by sedimentation at 1 × g in a two-phase system, using dextran as the erythrocyte-aggregating agent. The platelets in the plasma layer were counted electronically.

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979Platelets and leukocytes in venous blood were counted with automated methodology in 23 women studied longitudinally throughout pregnancy and at six weeks after delivery. The average platelet count declined monotonically in a manner consistent with the gestational increase in blood volume.

British Journal of Haematology, 1981Summary. The Coulter Model S‐Plus Counter provides a measure of the platelet count and the mean platelet volume (MPV). An analysis of 5000 unselected blood specimens showed an inverse relationship between the number of circulating platelets and their MPV.

Metoprolol and the Peripheral Platelet Count
Acta Haematologica, 1977An acute oral administration of 50 mg metoprolol (a selective beta-1-receptor antagonist) to 18 healthy volunteers induced a significant increase in the peripheral platelet concentration lasting more than 4 h. It is suggested that this increment in the platelet count originates from the exchangeable splenic platelet pool.
