Evaluation of the visual signal in playback by territorial responses of nuthatches

open access: yesAvian Research
A playback experiment is a well-established method for behavior research, especially in the study of the territorial responses of songbirds. Birds obtain information from multimodal signals, whereas only acoustic signals are provided in traditional ...

The Effect of Heterospecific Song and Anthropogenic Sound on the Development of Life History Traits in a Field Cricket

open access: yesEthology, Volume 132, Issue 7, Page 466-476, July 2026.
We raised fall field crickets in acoustic environments of silence, their own song, traffic noise, or the song of the recently introduced Japanese burrowing cricket and measured development, size, and adult survival. We found that crickets reared with burrowing cricket song developed more quickly than crickets reared in silence.

Free‐living Black‐tailed Godwits maintain constant intake rates across varying grassland habitat conditions by adjusting their foraging behaviour

open access: yesIbis, Volume 168, Issue 3, Page 876-889, July 2026.
Free‐living birds need to acquire enough food to fulfil their energetic needs, which may require more effort in habitats with less favourable conditions. Therefore, to maintain their necessary energy intake, birds need to adjust their foraging behaviour in response to varying habitat conditions.

Optimizing playback delay for multiuser video streaming

open access: yes, 2014
Playback delay control is an important mechanism to avoid jitter in video streaming systems. This paper introduces a playback delay minimization problem for multiuser video streaming systems providing a jitter-free video streaming service to end users in

Identifying Dolphin Whistle Producers With Deep Learning: Moving Beyond Signature Whistles

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Bottlenose dolphins produce several types of whistle contours, including signature whistles, shared whistles, copies of conspecifics' signature whistles, and variant whistles. While signature whistles as individual identifiers are well studied, less has been demonstrated for identifying dolphins from non‐signature whistle types.

Exploring the Role of Video Playback Visual Cues in Object Retrieval Tasks

open access: yesSensors
Searching for objects is a common task in daily life and work. For augmented reality (AR) devices without spatial perception systems, the image of the object’s last appearance serves as a common search assistance.

Schematic representation of the playback sequence.

open access: yes, 2018
Three distinctive phases are represented: the 10 minutes silent phase before the playback stimulus (“Before” in white), the three 30 seconds repetitions of the playback stimulus (“During” in black) and the 5 minutes silent phases following each playback ...
