Function of note strings in Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo: a playback experiment
Background Birds produce alarm calls to convey information about threats. Some Passerine alarm calls consist of several note strings, but few studies have examined their function. Previous studies have shown that Japanese Tits (Parus minor) can alter the

Detection Range of Acoustic Monitoring Devices in an Open Grassland Ecosystem
Understanding acoustic recording units (ARUs) detection space in different environments is essential to advancing the reliability of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) for avian population monitoring. In this study, we used a distance‐based broadcasting method at seven distances from ARUs in grassland systems to calculate the optimal detection distance ...

Studying Marine Mammal Cognition in the Wild: A Review of Four Decades of Playback Experiments [PDF]
The playback of sounds to animals to assess their behavioural responses presents a powerful tool to study animal cognition in the wild. While playbacks are commonly used to study acoustic responses in birds and other terrestrial animals, their application to the study of marine mammal cognition so far has been limited.

Consumer diversity drives stronger predation in tropical marine communities
Biotic interactions are predicted to be stronger in the tropics compared to higher latitudes, contributing to observed patterns of global biodiversity. While increased consumer diversity and more complex food webs are expected in tropical communities, the trophic dynamics underlying strong regional effects of predation are not well understood.

Abstract AI and data‐driven technologies are increasingly shaping work and skill demands, with growing evidence that AI can support workplace learning and professional development. However, research on how AI and data are integrated into workplace learning remains dispersed across disciplines, technologies and organisational contexts.

This study combines replicated experimental manipulation, social network analysis, network permutations and meta‐analysis to disentangle active from spatially‐induced changes in animal network structure in the wild. It reveals that short‐term environmental changes primarily alter space use, with limited effects on social structure.

Males of Hylodes perere emit territorial calls ranging from simple to complex combinations of peep (A) and squeal (B) notes, often accompanied by visual signals. Because note A resembles advertisement call notes whereas note B resembles fighting calls, variations in territorial calls may represent a behavioral continuum conveying different levels of ...

An investigation of the sound of foam and its potential influence on the shampoo experience
This study investigates shampoo foam acoustics' impact on hair washing experience using binaural recordings and psychoacoustic analysis. Distinct foam sound profiles elicited varying emotional responses; early lathering induced negative emotions while later phases were positive.
