Experiments with electron scanning for magnetic recording and playback of video
IEEE Transactions on Audio, 1963Present day video tape uses high speed mechanical scanning, with rapid wear of tape and heads. Electron beam scanning is proposed to eliminate mechanical problems and to allow the use of low cost tape. Development work has been conducted on a recording tube using a high density sheet beam to energize a simplified 500 element magnetic head. For playback

Functional referents and acoustic similarity: field playback experiments with rhesus monkeys
Animal Behaviour, 1998Rhesus monkeys, Macaca mulatta, on the island of Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico produce one or more of five acoustically distinctive calls when they find food. Three of these calls ('warbles', 'harmonic arches' and 'chirps') are produced by individuals finding high-quality, rare food items, whereas the other two calls ('coos' and 'grunts') are produced ...

Acoustic recordings were used to investigate the cardiac responses of a captive dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) to sound playback stimuli. A suction-cup hydrophone placed on the ventral midline of the dolphin produced a continuous heartbeat signal while the dolphin was submerged.

Are domestic chickens born with predator recognition? Validation of a sound playback experiment
Behavioural ProcessesPredation risk can influence behavioral decisions of animals in various ways. Prey animals have the opportunity to choose antipredation behaviors and escape strategies only by quickly and accurately identifying predators. As precocial birds, domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) have no adaptation period after hatching and must immediately ...

An Experiment with Recording and Playback Machines in Academic Foreign Language Teaching
The Modern Language Journal, 1948DURING the course of the Second World War the American Army was suddenly faced with the problem of a serious shortage of men with adequate language training. The Army Special Training Program was hastily constructed to overcome this handicap as rapidly as possible.
